Fastest Ways to Send Money Across Canada in 2026

For most payments across Canada, Interac e-Transfer from your existing bank is my pick, with the recipient's Autodeposit already set up.

Transfers are often almost instant, but some take up to 30 minutes depending on the bank or credit union.

Autodeposit removes the security-question step, while you can receive money instantly in Wealthsimple or KOHO when you both already use the service.

Interac e-Transfer through your bank

For transfers within Canada

Interac connects participating Canadian bank and credit-union accounts, so a payment between provinces does not need a foreign-currency remittance.

Send through your bank's online or mobile banking using the recipient's registered email address or mobile number.

If Autodeposit is active, check the displayed recipient name before confirming, with the funds deposited automatically into their selected account.

Without Autodeposit, the recipient needs to accept the notification, sign into their banking and answer the security question before choosing the deposit account.

I'd say agree on that step before sending urgent rent or shared expenses, rather than leaving the payment waiting for a reply.

The email or text carries the notification, with the money moving between accounts through the banking system.

For timing, TD typically notifies recipients within one minute, although some notifications take up to 30 minutes.

That notification is not a promise that every recipient has already accepted or can use the deposit.

Check the actual send limit in your bank app, since a single national cap does not apply to every institution and account.

Pay someone who also uses Wealthsimple or KOHO

Use the account you both already have

Wealthsimple Pay friends sends money instantly between personal Wealthsimple chequing accounts, with automatic receipt and no security question.

I'd say consider it when the recipient already holds that account and plans to spend or keep the balance there.

Its Pay friends limits are C$5,000 daily, C$10,000 weekly and C$30,000 monthly, separate from its enhanced Interac limits.

Confirm the recipient's handle before sending, since a completed payment cannot be cancelled or recalled.

KOHO-to-KOHO payments are also free and instant, using a fully verified account's Spendable balance.

KOHO's borrowing balance is not available for this sending method, so check the balance shown before making the payment.

If the email belongs to another KOHO user, the app defaults to that account unless you explicitly select Interac instead.

PayPal for a recipient who already uses it

Compare the withdrawal before choosing the account balance

I like an available PayPal balance when the recipient already wants a personal payment in PayPal, with both Canadian accounts ready.

A domestic personal payment funded by balance or bank is free without conversion, while card funding adds a fee.

If the recipient needs money in their bank, check the available withdrawal option before assuming the payment is complete for their use.

An eligible Instant Transfer typically takes minutes, with bank clearing sometimes extending it to 30 minutes.

Standard bank withdrawal usually takes one to three business days, which can make a quick balance payment less useful for an urgent bank deadline.

The Canadian instant debit-card withdrawal fee is 1.75%, with a C$0.25 minimum and C$25 maximum.

On a C$500 eligible instant withdrawal, that percentage fee is C$8.75, within the published minimum and maximum.

Check the app's supported debit card or bank rather than assuming every Canadian account qualifies for the instant option.

What if the amount exceeds your normal limit?

Start with the actual account's remaining sending capacity, including any earlier payments that count toward its daily, weekly or monthly limits.

Wealthsimple's default Interac limits are C$5,000 daily, C$10,000 weekly and C$30,000 monthly, using rolling periods.

If eligible, you can increase the daily limit up to C$50,000 in the app, with your account history and verification affecting access.

That enhanced Interac option does not raise the separate C$5,000 daily Pay friends limit.

Before opening another service shortly before the payment is due, I suggest checking an existing account's available settings.

For a larger bank-handled transfer, ask the bank for its domestic wire timing and the recipient's expected account credit.

CIBC's personal domestic wires take two to three business days, so a wire is not automatically a same-day alternative to Interac.

Check the branch's process and deadline before committing to a purchase or another payment that must arrive that day.

A cheque or bank draft also needs its own receiving and hold arrangements, rather than qualifying as an instant online transfer.

How to fund your transfer quickly

The sending account needs available money before payment, with a new deposit or account verification capable of adding time before the transfer starts.

Use the available Canadian-dollar balance

For bank-to-bank Interac, use the Canadian-dollar account offered by your institution and check that the payment is within its current limits.

For an internal Wealthsimple or KOHO payment, the recipient needs the matching service, rather than only a bank account elsewhere.

Move your own funds before the deadline

Wealthsimple supports own-account Interac funding from another bank, with money available for sending or withdrawal after it is received.

The request must use matching ownership details, with a C$10,000 per-transaction cap or the lower external bank limit.

Do not apply that immediate availability to every linked bank deposit, since another funding route can have different access rules.

Allow for a new account or held deposit

A newly opened account needs its required verification, while a pending deposit is different from money already available to send.

My suggestion is to fund and verify an unfamiliar account ahead of an urgent payment rather than rely on the account-opening screen alone.

Your recipient prefers PayPal

Avoids waiting for a new balance deposit

Choose how the recipient will receive the money

Directly into a Canadian bank account

Autodeposit removes the manual security-question response, with the registered identifier directing the payment into the selected account.

Ask the recipient to finish registration and its verification before you send, then confirm the name shown by your bank.

If they prefer accepting manually, make sure they can respond promptly and already know the agreed security answer.

The distance between cities does not create a currency conversion, so a Toronto-to-Vancouver CAD payment uses the same domestic method.

Inside a shared account service

An instant internal payment is useful when the recipient wants that balance, without needing another transfer to reach their usual bank.

If a withdrawal is needed, include its availability, fee and processing time before choosing the internal payment.

Avoid delays on an urgent domestic payment

Agree where the recipient needs the money

Choose their bank or existing platform account, and confirm whether Autodeposit, manual acceptance or a later withdrawal is needed.

Check available balance and current limits

Include earlier payments in the account's limit, and confirm the money is available to send before selecting an urgent receiving deadline.

Confirm the recipient before paying

Check the registered name, email, phone number or account handle, with any required Autodeposit registration completed before the payment.

If an Interac payment is delayed, check its bank status and ask whether it is awaiting review or the recipient's acceptance.

Contact your bank or credit union with the payment details, since Interac does not hold the money or trace it directly for you.

For a platform withdrawal, check whether the service has released it or the receiving bank is still processing the deposit.

Do not create a second payment simply because a notification or bank balance has not updated yet.

Compare fees for the same domestic outcome

Check the total cost for the account and receiving method you will use, rather than comparing only a free app download.

Interac fees depend on the bank and account, with eligible TD personal accounts including sending while other account services can have different charges.

Wealthsimple Pay friends and KOHO-to-KOHO provide instant internal options, but their account requirements and a later external transfer still need consideration.

I suggest comparing the complete payment and withdrawal before paying a speed fee for an outcome Interac already supplies through your account.

Our methodology & why trust us

We compared Canadian domestic methods using current official bank, Interac and account-service information, with timing tied to the recipient's stated receiving option.

The assessment includes account readiness, acceptance and sending limits, distinguishing direct bank payments from internal transfers and withdrawals.

We used personal banking sources for larger payments, with international exchange-rate comparisons excluded from this domestic assessment.
