How to Transfer Large Sums of Money in Canada

Affiliate Disclosure

MoneyTransfers aims to help users find the best money transfer provider for their needs. To support our free service, we may earn a commission from some of the providers listed in our search results. The commission may also impact the ordering of the providers shown. Our reviews are independent from this and are based on our research and testing of dozens of remittance providers on the market.

Table of contents

For a large international transfer from Canada, I would get quotes from 3-4 brokers, Wise, your bank, and compare the final amounts.

A broker can give you a better rate at five figures, while Wise gives you a transparent self-service price to beat.

If the money is staying between Canadian bank accounts, you do not need an international transfer company.

A linked-account transfer, bank wire or bank draft will normally make more sense.

At a glance

Based on our comparison, analysis, and my experience, I’d suggest getting quotes from these companies:

  • Key Currency

  • Regency FX

  • OFX

  • MTFX

  • Currencies Direct

Each gives you an account manager, dedicated support, and will help you negotiate the exchange rates.

But at the end of the day, whoever gives you the best quote and service for your needs is the one you should stick with.

I also suggest getting a quote from Wise, since they offer discounts on large transfers, but it's a self-service option which might not be the most comfortable option for many.

Table updates weekly. All information comes directly from our comparisons, provider APIs, and manual rate collection.

Since the exchange rates change all the time, the table above will always show the best deals based on our lates comparison. Everything below is generally a good place to start when planning a large transfer.

Best companies for large international transfers from Canada

I would start with brokers once you are sending CAD$25,000 or more.

Wise still belongs in the comparison, but I would use it as a comparison point rather than assume it will be cheapest.

Your bank should be a part of the comparison

Ask your bank for the exchange rate, sending fee and any intermediary charges. A low wire fee means very little if the bank gives you a worse exchange rate.

The best company can change when you change the amount or destination.

Get new quotes when you are ready to send, then check how long the rate is held and when your payment must reach the company.

Key Currency

Key Currency is where I would start if you want a broker to handle a large personal transfer.

It has dedicated Canada-outbound services and gives you a currency specialist to contact.

It does not charge a separate transfer fee, but the cost is still built into the exchange rate.

Here’s how much you can expect to get with Key Currency for different destinations:

CAD
Currency pairReceive amountMarkup
CAD / EUR€6,222.950.25%

CAD / USD$7,242.850.25%

Ask for the final recipient amount and compare that with the other quotes.

Key Currency also offers forward contracts, which can help when you know the amount and payment date in advance.

Confirm the availability for your Canadian payment and ask about the cancellation terms before fixing the rate.

Regency FX

Regency FX gives you a dedicated account manager and supports spot payments, forward contracts and rate monitoring.

This makes sense when the transfer has a deadline and you want someone to check the process with you.

Its margin is included in the exchange rate, just like with other currency brokers.

Here’s how much you can expect to get with Regency FX for different destinations:

CAD

OFX

OFX has no maximum transfer amount, although your own bank may limit how much you can send in one payment.

Its Canadian service gives you 24-hour phone support, which is useful when your deadline or recipient is in another time zone.

The cost is built into its exchange rate and high-value transfers usually get better exchange rates:

CAD
Currency pairReceive amountMarkup
CAD / CNY¥48,476.950.50%
CAD / EUR€6,207.360.50%

A third-party bank may still deduct a fee before the money reaches the recipient.

OFX has a CAD$200 minimum transfer, but it makes more sense here at much higher amounts where you can use its support and high-value pricing.

Currencies Direct

Currencies Direct has a Canadian service with account managers, rate alerts and tools for spot and future payments.

It does not normally charge a separate transfer fee, but it makes money through the exchange rate, just like others.

Here’s what you can expect to get from Currencies Direct:

CAD
Currency pairReceive amountMarkup

Once you confirm a currency contract it can be binding, so make sure the amount, date and recipient details are final before agreeing.

I think they are best used for a property purchase. Their account managers are really good at dealing with property related transfers.

Wise (Self service option)

Wise is usually not my first choice for a six-figure transfer, even if they get you the most money.

The reason is, currency brokers give you more support, help you with any issues, negotiate on your behalf, and can provide insights on market timings.

With Wise, it's largely on you.

They do have support options, but nowhere as tailored as you get with a currency broker, and it’s the usual complaint from our users.

For Canadian customers, Wise applies a volume discount once monthly transfers or conversions pass CAD$35,000.

Here’s what you can expect to receive with Wise:

CAD
Currency pairReceive amountMarkup
CAD / CNY¥48,184.920.05%

You can also fund up to CAD$1.5 million by online bill payment or wire, while direct debit, cards and Interac have much lower limits.

That does not mean your bank will let you send the full amount online, due to their own limits, so confirm with them first, and expect Wise to ask for proof of where the money came from.

Wealthsimple

If the money is already in a Wealthsimple chequing account, its Wise-powered international transfer is another convenient option and has a stated daily limit of CAD$1 million.

Compare the quote with Wise directly because it is another way to access the service, not a separate payment network.

MTFX - Canadian broker

MTFX is based in Canada and handles large personal transfers for property, tuition, relocation and investments.

It gives you a Canadian account manager just like OFX and is registered with FINTRAC.

Its pricing is quote-based, so ask for the exact foreign-currency amount your recipient will get and whether another bank can deduct a fee.

Where are you sending money?

The best method depends on whether you need currency conversion.

Moving money between your own Canadian accounts

A linked-account transfer can work when both accounts belong to you. There is no currency conversion, but the sending bank may limit the amount and the receiving bank may place a hold.

If the amount is above your online limit, ask whether the bank can raise it or complete the transfer for you.

Making a large Canadian payment

A domestic wire is usually the better option when the payment is urgent. Interbank Canadian wires are generally processed through Lynx, which supports real-time, final payments between participating financial institutions.

You may need to visit a branch to process the transfer.

Ask for the recipient's exact banking details and check them carefully because a completed wire can be difficult to recover.

A bank draft works when the recipient wants guaranteed funds and timing is less urgent. The receiving bank can still place a hold while it verifies the draft, so check this before using one for a fixed completion date.

Sending money abroad

A currency broker is the best starting point for a large conversion because you can discuss the payment, request a quote and get help with the funding process.

The downside is that most brokers do not publish their full exchange-rate margin before you register.

And, quotes may differ between first and subsequent transfers, so make sure to check with your account manager if you’re planning to make multiple transfers.

They may be able to lock your rate for future and recurring transfers.

Compare quotes at roughly the same time and ask how long each rate is guaranteed.

Wise is the easiest self-service benchmark because it shows the fee, exchange rate and recipient amount before you send.

Wise is not the only option, I've covered the best "self-service" options in our guide to the best money transfer companies in Canada.

The downside is that you need to handle everything end to end, which can be nerve racking when sending CAD$200,000.

Your bank's foreign-exchange desk is also worth checking if it will give you a negotiated rate, ideally, after getting quotes from Wise and brokers so you have a bit more leverage.

One tip from me:

Get the quotes from 3-4 currency brokers, Wise, your bank.

Then, go back to the brokers and tell them you’re getting a better rate with other brokers.

Most of the time, they will either match it or give you a better offer.

Remember, they get a percentage from the transfer as commission, so securing you as a customer is in their interest, even if they have to offer you a better exchange rate.

Norbert's Gambit can work for CAD to USD

Norbert's Gambit uses an interlisted security to convert CAD into USD inside a brokerage account.

It can reduce the conversion cost, but you need to buy the security, journal it to the US side and wait for settlement.

I would only use it if you already understand the brokerage process and have a suitable way to send the USD afterwards.

Trading fees, price movement and timing can remove some of the savings, and it does not help with EUR transfers, GBP or most other currencies.

Compare the total cost before you send

The visible transfer fee is rarely the biggest cost on a large international payment.

Your total cost can include:

  • The exchange-rate margin

  • A transfer fee

  • Your bank's funding fee

  • Intermediary-bank charges

  • A fee at the receiving bank

Exchange-rate margin explained

The exchange-rate margin is the difference between the mid-market rate and the rate in your quote.

It can be built into a transfer that advertises no separate fee.

Here is what a small rate difference means in Canadian dollars:

This is why I would not choose a company because it says there is no fee.

Ask how much arrives in the destination currency, then compare that number across every quote.

Comapre quotes

Compare quotes within the same hour where possible. Currency markets move all the time, so yesterday's result may not be the cheapest today.

How to send a large amount from Canada?

Confirm the destination currency and recipient details

Ask which currency the account accepts, then get the recipient's legal name and address, account number or IBAN, bank name, SWIFT or BIC code and any local clearing code requested by the company.

Verify and double check all the details, and if anything changes before the transfer, verify it again.

We have:

Or use one of the available options online.

Prepare proof of funds

Gather the documents showing where the money came from before asking a broker to fix a rate.

A company can approve your identity and still request more information once it sees the amount and payment purpose.

Confirm your Canadian bank limit

Ask your bank (where the money will come from) how much you can send by online bill payment, EFT or wire.

A transfer company's limit does not override the limit on your chequing account.

Get like-for-like quotes

Use our comparison to get the latest quote.

Give each company the same CAD amount, destination currency, funding method and payment date.

Compare what arrives after the known costs.

Exclusive rates

Currency brokers offer us exclusive rates on the first transfer.

This is why the receive amount will be different on MoneyTransfers.com compared to other sites or going direct.

Ask about other bank deductions

Ask whether intermediary or receiving banks can deduct money. If the recipient must receive an exact amount, say this before you send.

Check the contract before agreeing

Confirm the exchange rate, recipient amount, funding deadline, cancellation terms and support contact.

A currency contract can be binding even if you have not funded it yet.

Again, if you are planning to make multiple transfers, make sure to let them know, because the exchange rate markup they charge you will likely be different.

Send a test payment if you can

Any currency broker, bank, or online provider like Wise, will let you make a small transfer first.

Once you’ve identified the method/company that works for you, make a small test transfer.

Most brokers will let you send CAD$2 - CAD$10 (subject to their minimum) to get the feel of the process before sending everything.

Also, a small test will confirm the recipient details.

It does not guarantee that the full transfer will avoid another compliance review, but it will get you familiar with the process.

Confirm the banks

Tell your bank about the large transfer coming out of your account, and ask your recipient to tell their bank a large transfer will be coming in.

Banks are known to flag unusual transfers (especially large), so notifying them reduces the risk of any delays (but it doesn't remove it completely).

Keep every record

Save the quote, contract note, bank confirmation and transfer reference.

You will need them if either side has to trace the payment.

What happens when you send CAD$10,000 or more?

Canadian reporting rules do not stop you from sending CAD10, 000, CAD500,000 or more.

FINTRAC requires reporting entities to report a qualifying international electronic funds transfer of CAD$10,000 or more.

Separate transfers can also be grouped under the 24-hour rule when they meet its conditions.

The bank or money transfer service files the report.

You do not normally submit it yourself, and the report does not automatically mean the transaction is suspicious.

Structuring

Do not divide one payment into smaller transfers to avoid the threshold or a source-of-funds check.

It can create more questions and delay the money.

Does the CRA tax a large money transfer?

The transfer itself does not decide whether tax is due, but the reason you have the money can.

Moving your own after-tax savings between accounts does not normally create a new tax just because you transferred it.

Most cash gifts and inheritances are not reported as taxable income in Canada, but attribution and capital-gains rules can still apply in some circumstances.

For example, selling an investment or property can create a taxable gain before you transfer the proceeds.

The destination country can also have its own tax and reporting rules.

Keep the supporting records and get tax advice for your circumstances if the money comes from a sale, inheritance, gift or investment.

This information is for general purposes only and is not tax advice. Seek tax professional advice before making a transfer if unsure.

Documents you may need

The company will normally ask for documents connecting the money in your account to a legitimate source.

Where the money came from

Documents you may be asked for

Salary or long-term savings

Recent bank statements, payslips or an employment letter

Property sale

Sale agreement, lawyer's completion statement or a statement showing the proceeds

Inheritance

Will, probate document, executor's letter or estate statement

Investments

Brokerage statements and evidence of the sale or withdrawal

Loan

Signed loan agreement and a statement showing the money arriving

Family gift

Gift letter, donor identification and evidence of the donor's source of funds

Tuition or property purchase

Invoice, admission document, purchase contract or lawyer's trust instructions

Joint account

Statement showing both account holders and your authority to send

The name on the funding account should match the transfer account.

A payment from someone else's account can be rejected even when the money belongs to your spouse or another relative.

Make sure the documents show your name, the amount and how it reached your account.

A single screenshot without the transaction history may not be enough.

Staying safe when making large transfers from Canada

Here are a few things to remember when making a large transfer abroad from Canada.

Check the legal company

Search the legal entity in FINTRAC's money services business registry. If you are in Quebec, check its provincial money-services status as well.

FINTRAC registration is a legal requirement, not an endorsement.

You can also check the Bank of Canada's payment service provider registry where the Retail Payment Activities Act applies.

Verify every payment instruction

Property and legal payments are common targets for invoice fraud.

Call your lawyer, notary, school or recipient using a number you already know, especially if an email changes the bank details.

Check how your money is held

A non-bank transfer company does not give you the same protection as a deposit in your Canadian bank account.

Check which regulated entity handles the payment and how it safeguards client money while the transfer is in progress.

CDIC protection does not automatically apply because a fintech company uses a Canadian bank.

It depends on how eligible deposits are held and disclosed.

Avoid workarounds

Do not send through a friend's account, carry the amount in cash or convert it to cryptocurrency to avoid a bank limit.

These options make the money harder to trace and add more risk.

For property or another high-value purchase, use a lawyer, notary or regulated escrow account where the transaction requires one.

How long does a large transfer take?

A large international transfer can take longer than the one or two days shown in a quote, especially when it is your first payment.

The full timeline includes:

  1. Your Canadian payment reaching the transfer company

  2. Identity and source-of-funds checks

  3. Currency conversion and payment processing

  4. Checks at the receiving bank

Weekends, bank cut-off times and intermediary banks can add another delay.

Advertised transfer speed

The transfer speed you get and see online is usually from the moment the company receives the money.

It does not include the funding time.

For example, you may see “1 day transfer” time, but if it takes 3 days for the company to receive money, the transfer will take 4 days in total.

If you do nee money urgently, there are more ways to send money abroad quickly.

Start verification early if the money is for a property completion, tuition deadline or legal settlement.

I would rather have an approved account sitting unused for a week than discover on completion day that the bank needs another statement.

When your bank may still be the right choice

Banks are often more expensive for currency conversion, but they can still make sense when:

  • The payment is staying in Canada

  • You have linked accounts in Canada and the destination country

  • The bank's foreign-exchange desk gives you a competitive negotiated quote

  • The recipient or escrow account requires a wire from your own bank (named transfer)

  • Branch verification matters more to you than a small price difference

Ask for the recipient amount, not only the wire fee.

Some banks also have a digital international transfer service with different pricing from a traditional SWIFT wire, so compare both if they appear in your account.

Compare your transfer before you send

Enter your amount and destination below, then compare the live result with at least two broker quotes.

Use the final recipient amount and make sure every quote uses the same funding method and payment date.

Our methodology and why you can trust us

We started with companies that accept large personal transfers from Canada, then compared them using the same amount, destination and funding method where possible.

We looked at the final amount received, exchange-rate margin, fee, Canadian funding limits, support, verification and possible third-party charges.

The comparison data updates weekly. We also check Canadian availability, company terms and regulatory records before suggesting them.

Editorial suitability comes first and commercial relationships do not decide the order.
