Table of contents
I think the best app depends on what you need:
TapTap Send for small repeat payments home
Wise for one-off transfers and travelling
Remitly for cash delivery
But none of them will always be best or cheapest for everyone.
The best app changes with the destination, amount, payment method and how your recipient wants to receive the money. This is why I always suggest running a live search using the form:

At a glance
As I mentioned, the "best" will depend on your needs, but these are generally the best to start with:
TapTap Send is best for repeat payments home.
Remitly is best for family transfers when the recipient needs flexible delivery.
Wise is the simplest app for a transparent bank transfer.
RemitBee is best for repeat transfers funded from a Canadian bank account.
Xe is best for following exchange rates before sending.
Western Union is best when the recipient needs cash.
KOHO is a convenient option if you already have a KOHO account.
LemFi is best for supported destinations across Africa and South Asia.

TapTap Send for repeat payments home
TapTap Send is one of the simplest apps here if you want to pay by debit card and plan to send money frequently.
Available on:
iOS and Android
App store rating:
4.7/5 (30k+ reviews)
Google play rating:
4.7/5 (338k+ reviews)
It is also the only app on the list that offers so many individual delivery options, for example:
Mobile wallets: Alipay, GCash, Coins.ph, DANA and GoPay
Mobile money: M-PESA, bKash, Easypaisa, JazzCash, Orange Money and Airtel Money
Cash pickup: 7-Eleven, Coppel, Al Barid Bank, Bank Al-Habib and Banco Industrial
And you get the usual bank deposits and local payment systems such as Pix and UPI.
The only other app that offers this many delivery options is MoneyGram.
You can pay for your transfer with the eligible Visa, Visa Electron, Mastercard and Maestro cards, but credit cards, prepaid cards, corporate cards and Interac are generally not supported.
In terms of transfer fees it is cheap compared to similar options, but not always the cheapest, here’s what you can expect to give you an idea:
The limits are fairly low in the app, it is capped at CAD$3,500 per transfer, CAD$9,500 per day and CAD$30,000 over 14 days, so it’s better for small repeat payments rather than one-off transfers.
However, the main downside is its coverage, which is much smaller than Wise, Xe, and Remitly.
In my opinion, if it supports your destination, and it appears in the top 3 by receive amount, I would use it for repeat payments home (sending every two weeks or monthly transfers).
Wise is the easiest and the most straightforward app on here. It literally takes 5 steps to start, a few minutes to verify, and you’re good to send.
Available on:
iOS and Android
App store rating:
4.8/5 (168k+ reviews)
Google play rating:
4.8/5 (2m+ reviews)
Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate and shows its fee separately.
Fees start from 0.19%, although the exact cost depends on the currency and payment method.
This makes the cost easy to understand and plan around.
You can fund your balance using Interac e-Transfer, EFT, online bill payment, bank wire, a card, Apple Pay and Google Pay.
The available methods and limits depend on the destination, and card funding is normally more expensive.
Inside the app you can hold multi-currency balances, set up recurring transfers, set up direct debits, split bills, and much more.
And if you order the multi-currency card, you can manage it inside the app as well.
The downside is the opposite to Remitly. Wise is often the cheapest but does not offer any delivery options other than bank deposits.
I’d say if you’re fine with bank-to-bank transfer, Wise is the best.
If you need to deposit to a mobile wallet, cash pickup, cash delivery, etc. there are better options like Remitly or TapTap Send.
Remitly for cash delivery
Remitly would be my pick for cash delivery, it’s especially useful for transfers to elderly, unbanked locations, or someone who can’t get to the cash collection point.
Available on:
iOS and Android
App store rating:
4.9/5 (2.7m+ reviews)
Google play rating:
4.8/5 (1.64m+ reviews)
It’s not always the cheapest, but it’s the only app here that offers cash delivery.
Where Express and cash delivery are available, they may offer same-day delivery, but it normally costs more.
Depending on the destination, you can send CAD to a bank account, mobile wallet, cash pickup, cash delivery, or directly to the card.
And you might think “Western Union does this too”, and yes, but, the limits are much lower, and there’s no cash delivery service.
You can pay using Interac e-Transfer, a bank account, debit or credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
The options available for your transfer will appear in the quote before you send.
The main limitation is price, especially when compared to Wise, RemitBee, or TapTap Send.
Remitly's fee, exchange rate and delivery time change with the transfer option (economy or express), destination, payment method and payout option.
So don’t assume the cost will be the same for cash pickup and bank deposit.
In my opinion, Remitly is best when your recipient needs a specific delivery option, especially if the transfer is urgent.
RemitBee for bill payments
RemitBee makes sense for repeat transfers funded from a Canadian bank account. This is largely due to their promo rates and no fees on transfers over CAD$500.
Available on:
iOS and Android
App store rating:
4.5/5 (66 reviews)
Google play rating:
5/5 (10 reviews)
You can add money through Interac e-Transfer, EFT or bill payment. Debit-card funding is also available when you need the money to move faster.
Transfers over CAD$500 are free when you use e-Transfer, EFT or bill payment, anything smaller will have extra fees, around CAD$2.99.
That does not mean every bank-funded transfer is free. Bill payment depends on your bank, and the payment methods do not all have the same price or speed.
Recipient options also change with the destination, with bank deposit being the main one, but run a live search to check what is available for your transfer.
I think RemitBee is a good option for repeat transfers of CAD$500 or more, but I would still compare the final amount against Wise and Remitly.
Xe for tracking exchange rates
Xe has the most feature rich app when it comes to currency tracking, which is useful if you want to follow the exchange rate before deciding when to send.
Available on:
iOS and Android
App store rating:
4.8/5 (125k+ reviews)
Google play rating:
4.5/5 (399k+ reviews)
The app puts its currency converter, rate alerts, transfer quote and tracking in one place.
Depending on the destination, the recipient may be able to receive a bank deposit, cash pickup or mobile wallet payment.
The cost is less obvious than it is with Wise.Xe has a transfer fee while adding its margin to the exchange rate as well, so compare the amount your recipient gets rather than the rate you get in their currency converter.
Funding can also add time, since the delivery estimate depends on when Xe receives your payment as well as the destination and payout method used.
Xe is also a decent option for large transfers. At CAD$50,000, you can use its large-transfer service, where you can get additional support from its dedicated team.
In my opinion, the rate tools are the main reason to keep Xe on your phone, and I’d use it either for large transfers, or where other apps are not available.
Western Union is the easiest app when the recipient needs physical cash, since it has over 500,000 agent locations around the world.
You can start the transfer in the app, choose cash pickup where available and share the MTCN with the recipient.
I’ve used this feature a few times (I did it from the UK to the EU, but the principle is the same), and it's really convenient. The transfer went through in minutes, and my family had cash collected in under 10 mins.
Supported destinations may also offer bank deposit or mobile wallet delivery, but it doesn’t have cash delivery like Remitly.
You can pay using a bank account, credit card or eligible Visa debit card. A credit-card payment may be treated as a cash advance, so I’d avoid it unless you absolutely have to.
The downside is the cost and limits.
The fee, exchange rate, and the limits change with the destination, payment method, amount and how the recipient collects the money.
For a normal bank deposit, I would start with Wise or RemitBee. For cash, I would also compare Western Union with MoneyGram and Ria.
KOHO is best for extra banking features
Available on:
iOS and Android
App store rating:
4.8/5 (88k+ reviews)
Google play rating:
3.8/5 (74.7k+ reviews)
KOHO is great for extra banking features, since it is a Canadian financial app with international transfers built in, rather than a dedicated money transfer app.
You can set up and track the transfer without leaving KOHO, and use it alongside all their other banking features.
Most recipients are paid by bank deposit, with other delivery options available on selected destinations.
Just like Wise, they use the mid-market rate and add a small fee on top.
KOHO currently lets you send up to CAD$5,000 per day and CAD$15,000 per month.
That is enough for normal personal transfers, but it rules the app out for property, investment and other large payments (for that I would check Currencies Direct or even Wise).
I think the convenience only matters if you already have an account, or you benefit from other features they offer like cards, credits, investments, etc.
However, don’t underestimate it, I’ve seen it show up as the cheapest option in many of our comparisons, so definitely worth running a live search and comparing your options.
LemFi for South Asia and Africa transfers
Available on:
iOS and Android
App store rating:
4.8/5 (144k+ reviews)
Google play rating:
4.6/5 (62.3k+ reviews)
LemFi is a specialist app for money transfers to Africa and South Asia.
From Canada, you can fund it through Interac, Apple Pay or Google Pay. LemFi does not accept credit cards.
Recipients can get the money through a bank account or mobile money, depending on the destination.
LemFi supports fewer destinations than the general transfer apps, so check the country and payout method before adding money.
LemFi is not a bank, and money held in its Canadian account is not protected by CDIC. I suggest only adding what you need for the transfer rather than treating the balance like a bank account.
For Nigeria, compare LemFi with TapTap Send and Africhange.
The cheapest app changes by destination
A good Philippines option may be poor for Nigeria, and the app that’s best for sending CAD$500 may not be the best for CAD$1,000.
Here’s a breakdown of the cheapest apps from our live comparison.

Large transfers
If you’re looking for an app to send large amounts from Canada, then your options are fairly limited since most currency brokers are either online only or phone based.
Once you have all the quotes, tell others the best rate you got and see if they can match it or give you a better one.
And then just pick whoever gets you the most.
How to choose a money transfer app
Start with what your recipient needs, then work backwards to the app.
Check how the money arrives
Choose between bank deposit, mobile wallet, cash pickup or another local option before comparing prices.
Compare the amount received
Look at the final amount after the fee and exchange-rate margin. An app charging “no fee” can still cost more through its rate.
Choose how to pay
Interac e-Transfer, EFT, bill payment, bank transfer and cards can produce different prices and speeds. Credit cards may also trigger a cash-advance fee.
Allow time for verification
A first or larger transfer may be delayed while the app checks your identity or source of funds. Do not rely on the fastest advertised time for an urgent first payment.
Check the support before sending
Find the phone number, chat or escalation route before the money leaves your account. This matters more on a large or urgent transfer.
Make sure the amount fits
An app can be the wrong choice for a high-value payment. Get specialist quotes and ask about receiving-bank deductions before sending a large amount.
App-store ratings can help you spot recurring bugs or support complaints. They should not decide which app you use because a smooth login tells you nothing about the exchange rate for your transfer.
Which payment apps work inside Canada?
For a domestic payment, Interac e-Transfer is normally all you need.
It sends Canadian dollars from a participating bank or credit union to another Canadian account.
An international transfer app works differently.
It may use Interac or another Canadian payment method to collect your CAD, then complete the international transfer through its own network.
PayPal can handle some international payments, but its currency-conversion cost is very expensive compared to other money transfer apps.
A bank's international transfer feature is also separate from an ordinary Interac e-Transfer.
If both people are in Canada and the recipient wants CAD, you probably do not need any of the apps on this page, just use your bank (or KOHO).
When an app may not be the best option
I would say a money transfer app is the best used for recurring transfers abroad.
Anything else has better options available, for example:
Large transfers: currency brokers are much better for large transfers from Canada
In-person transfers: are better handled by agents like MoneyGram or Western Union (specifically when sending CAD)
For payroll, supplier payments or regular business transfers: a business money transfer service with the right payment and approval tools is much better.
For domestic transfers: your bank is the best option for transfers within Canada
Also, most online money transfer companies have apps, so if you need to make a mid-size transfer (2,000 CAD - 5,000 CAD), maybe switch to a laptop if you’re not comfortable doing it over the phone.
How to check whether a money transfer app is safe
Check the FINTRAC registry
Money services businesses operating in Canada must register with FINTRAC.
Registration confirms that the company has met its legal requirement to register. It is not a licence, endorsement or guarantee that a transfer will be problem-free.
Check the Bank of Canada registry
Payment companies covered by the Retail Payment Activities Act must register with the Bank of Canada.
The Bank publishes applicants separately from registered payment service providers, so do not treat applicant status as registration.
Check Quebec separately
Money-services businesses in scope need a separate Quebec licence. Confirm that the legal company serving you can operate in the province before sending.
Do not assume CDIC protection applies
Most transfer apps are not banks.
CDIC protection only applies when money is held as an eligible deposit under the required structure. An app saying that it holds customer money with a bank does not automatically make your balance CDIC-insured.
Protect the app and transfer
Use two-step verification or biometric login and check the recipient details through a trusted contact method.
Never send money because a stranger promises an investment return or tells you to ignore a fraud warning. If something goes wrong, contact the app immediately.
