How Does Mobile Money Transfer Work in the Philippines

Why trust usDisclosure
Table of Contents

Mobile money transfer in the Philippines covers local wallet payments, receiving money from abroad and, with GCash or PalawanPay, supported overseas sending.

I suggest choosing the wallet based on where you need the money next, whether that is paying someone, spending online or collecting cash.

Receiving a remittance into a wallet is convenient, but moving it straight into your bank afterwards can add a fee you could have avoided.

  • GCash: everyday payments and international transfers to selected foreign banks and wallets.

  • Maya Wallet: local transfers and overseas remittance receipt alongside everyday spending.

  • ShopeePay: shopping and domestic transfers, with selected overseas delivery options.

  • GrabPay: spending through Grab and transfers from your transferable balance.

  • PalawanPay: wallet transfers, international remittance claims and access to the Palawan cash network.

  • Check both the transfer company's payout limit and your wallet's remaining receiving allowance.

What is a mobile wallet?

A mobile wallet holds money you can use through an app, including payments, transfers and withdrawals supported by that particular account.

These terms overlap, but they describe different parts of a payment.

Mobile wallets

GCash, Maya Wallet and PalawanPay hold a peso balance that you can use without starting every payment from a bank account.

You add money by cashing in, transferring from another account or receiving a supported payment, then spend or move the available balance.

For holding foreign currencies rather than pesos, multi-currency accounts offer a different type of account to these local wallets.

Mobile money

Mobile money usually describes payments made through a mobile account, often identifying the recipient by their phone number rather than bank details.

A phone number can also identify a bank account, so the number alone does not tell you where the money is held.

Money transfer apps

International money transfer apps such as Wise and Remitly move money between countries, converting currencies and offering different receiving methods.

You can use one to send money into a Philippine wallet without the sender needing an account with that same wallet.

Mobile banking apps

A banking app gives you access to your bank account, including transfers to other banks and participating wallets through services such as InstaPay.

If you already have the money in your bank, sending directly can avoid cashing into a wallet and paying another transfer charge.

Apple Pay and Google Pay

Apple Pay and Google Pay can let you pay a supported transfer company using a linked card, depending on the service and country.

That card payment is different from sending a remittance into a GCash or Maya balance, and does not create a recipient wallet account.

Who handles the international transfer?

A wallet can receive money sent through a separate transfer company, and some wallets also let you arrange an international payment inside their app.

For example, someone sending money from the UK to the Philippines can use Remitly to pay GCash, while PalawanPay offers remittance-partner selection through Pera Padala Abroad.

The service where the sender books the transfer supplies the quote and reference, while the wallet controls access to the received balance.

If the overseas payment is delayed, start with the company that accepted it, whereas a locked wallet requires the wallet's support team.

I'd say compare the amount you can use after every charge, rather than assume that booking directly or inside a wallet is always cheaper.

If you need to send money abroad to a bank account or cash collection point, money transfer services in the Philippines give you options beyond your wallet.

GCash

GCash gives you local payments and overseas sending

GCash combines peso payments with International Transfer, which lets you send to selected foreign banks and e-wallets from the same app.

You can fund the wallet through bank transfers and cash-in outlets, although the charge depends on which cash-in channel you use.

I like having an overseas-sending option alongside everyday payments, but I suggest comparing money transfer apps in the Philippines by the final converted amount.

Sending money

For domestic payments, Express Send moves money to another GCash account, while Bank Transfer reaches participating banks and other wallets through InstaPay.

Bank Transfer costs ₱10 per transaction and has a ₱50,000 transaction cap, separate from your overall GCash account allowance.

For overseas payments, select International Transfer and choose the destination and recipient type before entering the requested bank or wallet details.

The service fee is 2%, with a ₱130 minimum and ₱1,200 maximum, so a ₱20,000 transfer has a ₱400 service charge.

The exchange rate and any funding charge also affect the total cost, so that ₱400 does not tell you the recipient's final amount.

For example, you can send to an Australian bank account through GCash, with same-day processing available including weekends and holidays.

You can also fund Wise from your own GCash wallet through InstaPay to send money from the Philippines to Australia and other supported destinations.

These Wise options show overseas bank payments of ₱20,000, which you can fund from GCash rather than using its native International Transfer.

GCash's International Transfer cannot be canceled after confirmation, so check the recipient details and converted amount before you pay.

Receiving money

Someone abroad can send directly into your GCash wallet through Wise, Remitly, WorldRemit or TapTap Send using your registered name and number.

For example, these options show €500 for sending money from France to the Philippines, Germany to the Philippines or the Netherlands to the Philippines, with GCash receiving the pesos.

Wise limits each wallet payment to ₱50,000, even when your GCash account can hold or receive more money overall.

For your first international remittance through TapTap Send, open GCash and accept the incoming-remittance terms so you can access the payment.

Western Union also supports claiming an eligible remittance through GCash using its tracking number, rather than treating every payment as an automatic wallet deposit.

For wider bank and cash options, the person sending can choose how you receive money from abroad based on where you need it.

Maya Wallet

Maya works well for local transfers and remittance receipt

Maya Wallet gives you peso payments, bank and wallet transfers, plus supported remittance receipt without needing to move money into Maya Savings first.

You can cash in through participating banks and counters, with a ₱8,000 monthly free allowance for the over-the-counter channels covered by Maya's cash-in policy.

Above that allowance, the applicable 2% cash-in charge can make funding the wallet more expensive than sending directly from your bank.

Maya Wallet and Maya Savings are separate products, so their fees, limits and protection should not be treated as interchangeable.

Sending money

You can send to another Maya user or a participating local bank or wallet, with the selected transfer charge shown before confirmation.

An Upgraded Maya Wallet has a ₱100,000 combined monthly wallet allowance, with cash-ins and incoming transfers counting towards the amount you can receive.

InstaPay sending has a separate ₱50,000 daily and ₱100,000 monthly cap, so check the particular transaction limit as well as account capacity.

For an international bank payment, you can fund Wise from your own eligible Maya wallet through InstaPay and arrange the overseas transfer separately.

I'd say use that option when you already hold pesos in Maya, while checking the wallet-to-Wise charge as part of the total cost.

Here are Wise’s ₱20,000 overseas bank-transfer options, funded from your own Maya wallet through InstaPay.

Receiving money

You need an Upgraded Maya account for international remittance receipt, with Wise, Remitly, WorldRemit and TapTap Send supporting direct wallet delivery.

Make sure the sender selects Maya Wallet rather than Maya Bank, because those choices refer to different accounts and recipient details.

These €500 payments from France, Germany and the Netherlands deliver pesos into Maya Wallet.

You can also claim an eligible Western Union remittance in Maya using its tracking number, which is a different receiving process.

ShopeePay

ShopeePay suits shopping money you also need to transfer

ShopeePay combines a shopping balance with domestic transfers, making it useful when you want to move money that is already in the wallet.

You need full verification to activate its transfer functions, and adding money through an external bank or cash-in service can carry separate charges.

I think it suits shopping and local payments, rather than an account opened specifically for sending money overseas.

Sending money

Transfers to supported local wallets and banks have a ₱0 ShopeePay transfer fee, although the funding channel can still charge you.

Its InstaPay sending limit is ₱50,000 per day, which is separate from the wallet's ₱100,000 fully verified account limit.

For sending abroad, use an eligible international transfer service rather than treating ShopeePay's domestic bank-transfer function as an overseas payment.

Receiving money

Wise and WorldRemit support selected overseas payments into ShopeePay, with a fully active account and the correct recipient name and phone number.

This gives you a way to receive money for shopping or onward domestic use without opening another wallet solely for the remittance.

These €500 options from France, Germany and the Netherlands support delivery into ShopeePay.

GrabPay

GrabPay makes sense when you will spend through Grab

GrabPay holds money for Grab services and other supported payments, but the amount you can spend is not always the amount you can transfer.

Card-funded money can be non-transferable, so topping up the wallet does not automatically make those funds available for sending or withdrawing.

I think it is worth considering when you expect to use the received money through Grab, rather than as a temporary stop before another account.

Sending money

Transfers to another GrabPay wallet are free, while sending transferable funds to a local bank or another e-wallet costs ₱10.

Check the transferable balance before arranging the payment, particularly if you have topped up by card rather than receiving transferable funds.

Using Grab for merchant payments abroad is different from sending money to someone else's foreign bank account or wallet.

Receiving money

Wise and WorldRemit support overseas delivery into GrabPay, even though GrabPay's domestic app is not itself a general international remittance service.

The sender needs the correct recipient information, and you need enough remaining account capacity for the incoming peso payment.

For direct GrabPay receipt, these options compare €500 transfers from France, Germany and the Netherlands.

PalawanPay

PalawanPay connects your wallet with cash and remittance services

PalawanPay combines a peso wallet with Palawan's branch and cash-access network, alongside international sending and remittance-claim functions in the app.

You can cash in through supported outlets and transfer channels, while full verification gives you access to its broader sending and cash-out features.

In my opinion, it belongs ahead of a shopping wallet when you regularly need cash access or arrange transfers through the Palawan network.

Sending money

You can make domestic wallet and bank transfers, or use Pera Padala Abroad to arrange an international remittance with a selected partner.

The overseas service offers bank, mobile-wallet and cash-pickup delivery, with the available choices depending on the destination you select.

Compare the final recipient amount and delivery method before choosing the partner, rather than deciding from a starting fee alone.

A verified personal account has ₱250,000 daily and cumulative monthly incoming and outgoing allowances, plus a ₱3 million annual limit.

Those account allowances do not mean every overseas transfer can use the full amount, because the selected remittance service has its own conditions.

Receiving money

You can claim eligible international remittances inside PalawanPay by selecting the partner and entering the required claim or reference code.

Supported claim partners include Remitly and UniTeller, with identity requirements depending on the chosen service and transfer.

This claim process differs from a sender selecting automatic wallet deposit, so agree on the correct receiving option before they pay.

At participating Palawan branches, Money Shops and remittance sub-agents, the cash-out promotion charges 1% until 31 December 2026.

For a ₱1,000 withdrawal, that means a ₱10 charge, which belongs in your calculation if the recipient needs cash.

Sending money within the Philippines

For a payment to someone using the same wallet, the phone number or in-app recipient details can avoid the need for bank account information.

When they use another wallet or bank, InstaPay usually handles the domestic transfer, with charges set by the service you send from.

PESONet is another bank-transfer option, processing payments in batches rather than promising an immediate credit for every instruction.

I suggest sending directly from your bank when that reaches the same recipient more cheaply, instead of funding a wallet just to send again.

Your situation

What to check

Paying someone using your wallet

Same-wallet fee and correct registered recipient

Sending to a different wallet or bank

Transfer fee and remaining InstaPay allowance

Moving money already in your bank

Direct bank payment versus cash-in plus wallet transfer

Recipient needs cash

Withdrawal fee, available outlet and claim requirements

Mobile money transfer fees

The cheapest-looking transfer can become more expensive when you add cash-in and withdrawal charges, especially for small payments sent regularly.

For example, a ₱1,000 GCash bank transfer costs ₱10 before any separate cash-in charge, while ShopeePay's supported domestic transfer fee is ₱0.

That difference is useful if you already hold money in either wallet, but funding a new account can change which option costs less.

Cost

Where it can arise

Cash-in

Adding cash or moving money from a bank/card

Transfer fee

Sending to another wallet, bank or overseas recipient

Currency conversion

Exchanging pesos or the overseas sender's currency

Cash-out or onward transfer

Moving the received balance to cash or a bank

For an overseas payment, compare the amount left after conversion and delivery, then subtract any charge needed to put it where you will use it.

Our cheapest ways to send money abroad from the Philippines comparison covers the wider cost decision when a local wallet is only one option.

Funding time, transfer time and access to the money

A payment has to reach the sending service before it can be processed, and a received wallet balance may still need withdrawing or claiming.

For example, Wise's peso payout can be instant up to ₱50,000 after it receives and converts the money, while conversion can take longer.

GCash's International Transfer to Australia has same-day processing, whereas a US bank payment has a three-business-day processing estimate and a cut-off time.

Those differences come from the selected payment service and destination, rather than every wallet transfer sharing the same delivery time.

If your recipient abroad needs cash today, include outlet opening hours and the claim process when considering fast transfers from the Philippines.

Mobile money transfer limits

The wallet's maximum balance, incoming allowance and sending cap answer different questions, so a large balance allowance does not guarantee a large remittance.

Limit

What it controls

Maximum wallet balance

How much you can hold at once

Incoming allowance

How much you can receive during the stated period

Outgoing allowance

How much you can send during the stated period

Per-transfer or payment-network cap

How much one payment can carry

Transfer company's payout cap

How much that service can deliver to the wallet

An ordinary fully verified adult GCash profile has ₱500,000 balance and monthly incoming/outgoing allowances, but Wise's individual wallet payout still stops at ₱50,000.

If you have linked GCash accounts, their incoming payments share the profile allowance rather than giving you a fresh limit for each number.

That is why I suggest checking the specific service and remaining account capacity before arranging a larger payment into any wallet.

How to make a mobile money transfer?

Start with where the money needs to end up

Choose wallet spending, bank receipt or cash collection before paying, because an unnecessary onward transfer can add a fee and delay.

Check the recipient's account before funding

Confirm the registered name and number, verification status and remaining receiving allowance, rather than relying on the wallet's headline maximum balance.

Fund through the right channel

Compare the bank or counter cash-in charge, then leave enough balance for the transfer fee instead of depositing only the amount you want to send.

Review the amount the recipient can use

For overseas payments, check the converted amount and any withdrawal charge, then confirm the recipient details once more before completing the transfer.

Save the reference and follow the correct status

Keep the transaction reference and receipt until the recipient can use the money, and check the existing payment before sending another one.

What if the payment is pending, missing or sent to the wrong account?

If money has left your balance but the recipient cannot see it, check the transaction status and reference before repeating the payment.

A remittance marked sent can still require a claim, verification or recipient-account correction, so confirm which stage the status describes.

Give support the transaction reference, amount, time, recipient details and screenshots, using the contact route inside the official app or help center.

Problem

Where to start

Overseas transfer has not arrived

The company that accepted the sender's payment

Remittance needs claiming

The wallet's claim screen and the sending reference

Wallet is locked or verification fails

The wallet's official account-support process

Recipient number is wrong

Sending service immediately, with the payment reference

Balance is visible but cannot be transferred

Transferable-balance and account-limit checks

A wrong-number transfer may not be recoverable once completed, and person-to-person payments do not automatically have the refund protection of a merchant purchase.

Is mobile money transfer safe?

The five wallets here are operated by electronic-money issuers listed by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, including G-Xchange for GCash and Maya Philippines for Maya Wallet.

That regulation does not remove fraud risk, and wallet e-money is different from a separately insured bank deposit held through a linked banking product.

Before sending, check the recipient through a separate conversation if their number or payment request has changed, especially for an urgent request.

Never share your OTP or MPIN with someone claiming to help, and open support through the official app instead of a social-media reply.

If you lose your phone or SIM, contact the wallet and mobile network promptly to secure access and follow the account-recovery process.

Compare available overseas transfer options before sending from your peso balance, including the wallet’s charge for funding the payment.

Our methodology & why trust us

We checked wallet functions, domestic charges, international partners, account limits and regulator records, then matched transfer-company options to the relevant sending or receiving task.

Our comparisons use MoneyTransfers data, while wallet fees come from researched product tariffs because automated wallet quotes are not available.

I have prioritized the account's usefulness for your payment, including where you can spend or withdraw the balance, rather than treating every wallet as interchangeable.

Our review methodology explains how we assess services and use pricing data.
