A Philippine bank deposit, a GCash or Maya receipt and cash pickup give you different ways to use the pesos sent from abroad.
For regular family support, I'd say choose the account or wallet you already use and compare the pesos arriving there before the sender pays.
Check wallet capacity and whether the chosen partner deposits directly or requires you to claim the remittance after it is sent.
If you want to keep dollars, use an eligible foreign-currency account with matching instructions before asking the sender to pay.

Bank deposit: receive PHP into your existing account using matching beneficiary details.
GCash or Maya: use a verified wallet and a partner that supports the selected route.
Cash pickup: bring accepted ID and the transfer reference once the payment is ready.
Keep USD: use a suitable foreign-currency bank account or supported currency-account details.
Wallet limits: check both balance capacity and your remaining incoming allowance.

Receive pesos into your Philippine bank account
An overseas sender can use Wise, Remitly, Western Union or another supported service to deliver PHP into the account you already have.
The sender completes registration and funding abroad, while you supply the beneficiary information needed for the Philippine bank deposit.
Prepare the following details before asking the overseas sender to pay:
Your full account-holder name.
Bank name and account number.
Your address and mobile number when requested.
The accurate reason for the remittance.
Western Union supports local-currency bank receipt at banks including BDO, BPI, Landbank and Metrobank, with the receiving account matching its PHP payout requirement.
I suggest considering this for money that should stay in your bank, avoiding another transfer out of a wallet or a trip to collect cash.
A local payout arranged by a transfer company can use different instructions from a SWIFT wire sent directly by an overseas bank.
If a foreign bank is paying you, ask your receiving bank for its incoming instructions, including the SWIFT/BIC and any correspondent details required.
BPI’s SWIFT code is BOPIPHMM, with BOPIPHMMXXX also used, but the account number and payment currency still need to match the intended receipt.
Receive money into GCash or Maya
A supported overseas service can deposit pesos directly into your verified GCash or Maya wallet, ready for eligible local payments.
For money sent from the US to the Philippines, Remitly supports GCash and Maya among its payout choices.
Give the sender the full name and mobile number registered to the wallet, then ask them to select that exact wallet during setup.
Western Union also supports verified GCash, Maya, USSC and PERA HUB wallets, with availability depending on the sender’s transfer route.
I like direct wallet receipt when you will pay bills or shops from that balance, since you can avoid withdrawing cash first.
Check how much your wallet can hold and receive before the transfer, particularly when other remittances have already arrived that month.
From 1 October 2026, a standard Fully Verified adult GCash profile has a ₱500,000 wallet limit and ₱500,000 monthly incoming limit.
The incoming allowance and balance limit are different, so spending money can create balance space without restoring an already-used monthly receiving allowance.
Other profiles have different limits, and linked GCash accounts share the applicable profile allowance rather than multiplying it.
The sending company can also set a lower transaction limit, so the wallet ceiling alone does not establish that every transfer will be accepted.
Direct deposit and claiming a remittance work differently
A direct wallet payout credits your balance through the chosen partner, while some remittances require you to claim using their reference inside GCash.
For a claim, open Cash In, choose Global Banks and Partners and follow the instructions for the relevant remittance partner.
Keep the reference, expected amount and other requested transfer details ready, with your name matching the verified account.
Use the process for that partner, because a transfer already sent for direct wallet deposit does not automatically need a manual claim.
Cash pickup can help when you lack a bank account, cannot access a wallet or need physical money without a later withdrawal.
Western Union and Remitly offer Philippine cash payout routes, with the sender choosing an available collection network before paying.
Remitly’s US to Philippines network includes locations such as M Lhuillier and Cebuana Lhuillier, alongside other bank and remittance partners.
Check the specific payout company and branch, rather than assuming a reference from one network can be claimed at any remittance shop.
Bring accepted government-issued photo ID and the transfer reference, using the same full name supplied by the sender.
You may also need the sender’s details and expected amount, so have the complete receipt information ready before travelling.
I suggest checking the collection status and branch hours first, especially if collecting outside a large city or near a holiday.
For eligible Western Union transfers, changing cash pickup to bank delivery requires the sender’s confirmation, with the feature limited to supported origins.
Receive and keep dollars or another currency
If you want to retain USD, a matching dollar account gives you a different outcome from receiving a peso remittance converted by the sending company.
BPI offers foreign-currency savings accounts, including US dollars, so you can ask the bank about opening requirements and incoming payments.
Give the sender the instructions for the currency account you want credited, including any correspondent details for the foreign bank’s wire.
Check incoming charges, minimum balances and access to the funds before opening a new account for occasional small payments.
Wise is another option for Philippine residents who want to receive supported currencies through the local or international account details available to them.
Use GBP details for an eligible pound payment or the appropriate USD instructions for a dollar payment, then decide when to convert the balance.
Wise applies receiving limits for Philippine accounts, and local PHP account details use domestic payment rails rather than accepting every foreign wire.
Keeping currency can avoid converting money you will spend in that same currency, although exchange-rate changes can alter its eventual peso value.
If the money pays for work, confirm that the collection service supports your commercial purpose and provides the records your bank and tax filing need.
GCash Request Payment includes partner-based PHP collection and an eligible Virtual US Account route, with separate eligibility and account conditions.
Compare those commercial features through our international business payments in the Philippines guide, because personal remittance quotes do not establish business pricing.
What does it cost to receive money from abroad?
Start with the pesos credited, then add any charge for withdrawing cash or moving the money to the account where you will use it.

BPI’s inward-remittance tariff includes a US$6.50 charge for credit to a BPI USD account, separate from any applicable sending or correspondent charge.
These rounded sending amounts illustrate family payments worth roughly ₱30,000 before fees, with the source input visible for each origin.

Check the payout method in your sender’s quote, since the comparison is not restricted to GCash or another single receiving network.
How long does it take to receive the payment?
A supported bank or wallet payout can arrive within minutes after funding and checks, while a foreign bank wire commonly takes several working days.
For Western Union bank receipt, first-time BPI payments can take up to two hours, and Landbank’s overnight processing can delay some payments.
For cash, you also need the payout location to be open and able to pay, even when the transfer status already shows readiness.
Account verification or a partner-specific claim step can delay access, so check whether the receiving service needs you to take action.
Limits and documents for receiving money
Your bank or wallet limit and the sender’s service cap can differ, so confirm the selected route accepts the amount before funding it.
Wallet balance capacity, monthly incoming allowance and the maximum for one remittance are separate restrictions that can all affect the same payment.
Keep identification current and retain documents explaining large receipts, such as savings statements, gift records, sale agreements or inheritance paperwork.
For work receipts, retain invoices and contracts alongside the payment trail so you can explain the payer, purpose and amount.
Bank reporting and source checks do not by themselves determine a tax bill or a general legal maximum on receiving money.
Do you pay tax on money received from abroad?
The tax treatment depends on the source of the money and your status, rather than whether it arrives through a remittance company.
Resident Filipino citizens generally face income tax on income from Philippine and foreign sources, while different rules apply to non-resident citizens and qualifying overseas workers.
Payment for services performed in the Philippines can be Philippine-sourced income even when the client and paying bank are abroad.
Moving savings, receiving family support and earning income need different records, while a gift or inheritance can involve separate donor or estate-tax questions.
Check BIR’s rules for your category before assuming all overseas receipts share the tax treatment of an OFW’s earnings abroad.
How to receive money from abroad in the Philippines
Choose bank, wallet or cash
Select where you want to use the pesos, or choose an eligible currency account if you want to retain the original currency.
Check verification and limits
Confirm your wallet or bank account is active, with enough balance capacity and remaining incoming allowance for the expected payment.
Send matching recipient details
Share the registered name and correct account or wallet number, or use bank-issued SWIFT instructions for a foreign wire.
Complete the receiving process
Check for direct credit, follow the partner’s claim steps when required, or collect cash with accepted ID once ready.
What if the money has not arrived?
Ask the sender for the transfer reference, selected payout method and delivery estimate, then compare the beneficiary details with your account.
For GCash or Maya, check the credited balance, verification and remaining limits, then establish whether the chosen partner requires a claim.
If the service marks the payment delivered but you cannot find it, contact the receiving bank or wallet with the reference and amount.
The sender should raise a trace with the sending company, or its bank for a SWIFT payment, and obtain the payment confirmation where available.
For cash, check the exact payout network and any name mismatch before visiting a different branch or asking for another payment.
If fewer pesos arrive
Compare the sender’s quoted PHP amount with the credited balance, then check cash-out or onward-transfer fees separately from the original receipt.
For a bank wire, ask whether currency conversion or correspondent and receiving-bank deductions explain the difference before arranging a top-up.
Use the form below with your sender to compare a personal payment into the Philippines before choosing the receiving method.
Compare transfers to the Philippines
Enter the sender’s country and amount, then choose the Philippines as the destination to compare available transfer rates and fees.
Our methodology & why trust us
We checked Philippine bank instructions and tariffs, current GCash limits, named wallet routes and BIR guidance relevant to overseas receipts.
Our comparison uses five inward routes with rounded amounts roughly worth ₱30,000 before fees, with wallet cash-out costs considered separately.
I prioritised the receiving process, including direct credit versus claiming, alongside options for keeping foreign currency or collecting cash.
