How Does Mobile Money Transfer Work in Spain

Why trust usDisclosure
Table of Contents

Mobile money transfer from Spain can put euros straight into a recipient’s overseas wallet, with the money converted into the currency they use locally.

For Colombia, that can mean a Nequi or DaviPlata balance, while Yape gives someone in Peru another way to receive and spend the payment.

You pay through an international transfer service, so your Spanish phone number does not need its own Colombian or Peruvian wallet.

Bizum covers a different job, connecting bank payments by phone number within its supported network rather than delivering money to every foreign wallet.

What is a mobile wallet?

A mobile wallet gives you a balance or payment account accessed through your phone, with features that depend on the account behind it.

Some services also connect to bank accounts, so a phone-number payment alone does not identify where the money is held.

Mobile wallets

Nequi and DaviPlata let a recipient use Colombian pesos for local payments, while Orange Money Europe can hold your euros before sending abroad.

For keeping different currencies yourself, multi-currency accounts offer a separate choice from topping up someone else’s local wallet.

Mobile money

Mobile money uses a registered phone number or mobile account to send and receive payments, often with cash access through local agents.

Your recipient’s account determines whether the money can be spent immediately, withdrawn nearby or moved to another bank account.

Money transfer apps

International money transfer apps collect your payment in Spain and arrange the overseas delivery, including named-wallet options such as Nequi or GCash.

Having the sending app does not mean you hold the receiving wallet yourself, or that every delivery option uses the same fee.

Mobile banking apps

Your Spanish bank app manages your bank account, and Bizum connects participating bank payments using a phone number instead of an IBAN.

It is possible to pay from a phone without holding money in a separate wallet, which is how many everyday bank payments work.

Apple Pay and Google Pay

Apple Pay and Google Pay can provide card-linked funding inside a supporting transfer service, using the card you have added to the account.

They do not turn your payment into a Nequi deposit automatically, because you still select the receiving wallet and enter its details.

Who handles an international mobile money transfer?

When you send through Remitly or Ria, the sending company collects your euros, handles conversion and arranges the payment to the recipient’s account.

The wallet then gives your recipient access to the money, with its own rules for spending, transferring or withdrawing the balance.

For example, sending money from Spain to Colombia through a supporting service can credit Nequi directly without a separate cash collection.

Bre-B also connects Colombian bank and wallet accounts through registered payment keys, but the key points to a particular account rather than a new balance.

I'd say confirm the account attached to that key before sending, especially when your recipient has both Nequi and a traditional bank account.

Wallets you can use for your transfer

The recipient’s existing account is usually the best starting point, because you want them to use the money rather than spend time opening another wallet.

Nequi in Colombia

Nequi gets family payments into an account your recipient can use locally

Your recipient can receive Colombian pesos into Nequi and use the balance for local payments, rather than collecting a transfer as cash first.

Receiving an international remittance carries no Nequi receiving fee, although the sending service’s fee and exchange rate still affect what arrives.

Your recipient must be an adult with accepted Colombian identification, including a citizenship card, foreign-resident identity card or temporary protection permit.

Sending to Nequi from Spain

From Spain, Remitly, TapTap Send, Ria and Western Union support Nequi payments, giving you several ways to fund the international transfer.

For a €500 payment, these figures show the pesos received in Nequi after the sending company’s international costs.

How your recipient receives and uses the money

Before a first remittance, your recipient needs to complete Nequi’s receive-from-abroad setup, including identification, personal details and acceptance of the terms.

A low-value Nequi deposit account can receive up to US$2,000 in remittances monthly, while a savings account can receive up to US$5,000 monthly.

The maximum individual remittance is US$2,000, with your euro payment converted for the service’s applicable limit rather than treated as the same numeric amount.

The remittance limit and remaining account capacity both apply, so your recipient should confirm their account type and available allowance before a larger payment.

DaviPlata in Colombia

DaviPlata fits someone who already uses Davivienda’s payment and withdrawal network

DaviPlata supports local payments and receiving remittances into the account, giving your recipient access through the services they already use.

I like it over opening Nequi when your family already pays from DaviPlata and can easily reach its cash withdrawal channels.

Sending to DaviPlata from Spain

Remitly, TapTap Send, WorldRemit and Ria support DaviPlata delivery, using the recipient’s registered number rather than a Spanish bank account number.

A €500 transfer into DaviPlata uses the same currency pair as Nequi, but selecting the right wallet still determines where your payment arrives.

How your recipient receives and uses the money

TapTap Send payments go directly into an active registered DaviPlata account, so the recipient does not need to collect a cash-pickup reference first.

If they want cash afterwards, DaviPlata’s withdrawal process generates a code for an eligible ATM or banking correspondent.

I suggest checking that withdrawal option before an urgent payment, because wallet credit and getting physical cash are different stages.

Yape in Peru

Yape makes sense for money your recipient will spend through phone payments

Yape supports local payments and international remittance receipt, with the international feature available for eligible Yape with BCP and Yape with DNI accounts.

Yape does not charge a fee for receiving a remittance, although conversion and the overseas sending company’s charges remain part of your payment.

Sending to Yape from Spain

You can send from Spain through Remitly, TapTap Send, Ria or Western Union, selecting Yape rather than bank deposit or cash collection.

TapTap Send caps its phone-based Yape payments at S/500, so my suggestion is that option for smaller regular payments rather than a large one-off transfer.

The €100 example below keeps the payment within that cap, with the recipient receiving soles rather than euros.

How your recipient receives and uses the money

The recipient needs the phone number registered to the eligible Yape account, with their account’s remaining allowance also applying to the payment.

Yape remittances in soles are limited to S/3,000 per transaction and S/12,000 per month, with TapTap’s phone-payment option having the lower S/500 cap.

Receiving a dollar remittance through Yape requires a BCP dollar account and a supporting remittance company, so it differs from the soles payment shown here.

For sending money from Spain to Peru, I suggest choosing soles when the money is intended for everyday local spending.

GCash in the Philippines

GCash avoids an extra transfer when the money is for wallet payments

GCash lets your recipient pay bills or use local wallet services after the overseas payment arrives in Philippine pesos.

If that is where your family spends the money, direct GCash delivery can remove the need to receive at a bank and transfer it again.

Sending to GCash from Spain

Wise, Remitly, TapTap Send and WorldRemit support GCash delivery from Spain, with the recipient’s registered mobile number identifying the wallet.

For €500, the following comparison shows the peso amount credited through the wallet receiving method.

How your recipient receives and uses the money

The account needs to be verified and have enough room for your payment, including the recipient’s other incoming activity that month.

Wise limits its GCash payments to ₱50,000 each, so a larger transfer may need bank delivery even when the wallet’s own balance allowance is higher.

Your recipient can spend from GCash or move money onwards, but the charge for that next transaction is separate from receiving your transfer.

Orange Money Europe

Orange Money Europe gives you a separate balance for sending abroad

You can open a euro wallet from Spain with accepted identification and a compatible mobile line, even if your phone service is with another operator.

Loading the account by card through the app is free, while the international sending fee depends on the destination and payment amount.

This account suits supported overseas wallet payments, rather than replacing your Spanish bank account for every bill or international transfer.

Sending money

For a recipient using Orange Money in Senegal, you can send from your European wallet and they receive CFA francs in their local account.

Remitly, TapTap Send and Western Union offer alternatives for getting money into that same Senegalese wallet without opening Orange Money Europe yourself.

For a €500 payment, compare those alternatives below against the final recipient amount offered inside your euro wallet.

Receiving money

You can receive euro payments from another supported European Orange Money Europe account, rather than receive directly into a Senegalese Orange Money account.

A full European account can hold €5,000, with top-ups limited to €1,000 each and €3,000 per day and month.

Those funding allowances suit regular family payments, while larger one-off amounts can be easier to arrange through a bank-funded transfer service.

Bizum and local transfers from your phone

For paying someone in Spain, Bizum can move money between linked participating accounts using the recipient’s phone number.

It also connects participating services in Portugal, Italy and Andorra, so describing every Bizum payment as domestic would miss those supported international payments.

That coverage does not make Bizum a way to fund any foreign wallet, including Nequi in Colombia or GCash in the Philippines.

For a euro payment to a participating contact, I'd say check your bank app first before paying for an international conversion service.

If you need another currency or a destination outside that network, money transfer services in Spain offer broader bank and wallet delivery options.

How you fund the international payment

An international wallet transfer can be funded from your Spanish bank account or an accepted card, depending on the service you choose.

For example, WorldRemit supports cards, Apple Pay and Trustly from Spain, so its wallet delivery does not require you to hold a foreign account beforehand.

Cash funding through a supporting remittance agent is another option, but visiting an agent in Spain does not require the recipient to collect cash abroad.

What you have

Funding decision

Money in your Spanish bank account

Use a supported bank payment or debit card

Euros held inside a sending account

Spend the available balance without loading it again

Cash

Choose an agent-supported service and request the named wallet payout

Apple Pay linked to your card

Use it only where the sending service accepts that funding method

I suggest checking the final charge before using a credit card, because your card issuer can add costs beyond the transfer company’s quote.

Mobile money transfer fees

A free receiving wallet does not remove the international conversion cost, because the service you pay in Spain still sets a fee and exchange rate.

TapTap Send has no separate transfer fee for Nequi and DaviPlata payments from Spain, with its cost included in the exchange rate.

The same company charges €1.75 for its Colombian cash-pickup option, so changing the receiving method can change your cost even within one country.

In Colombia, account withdrawals or other movements can also be subject to local transaction tax, depending on your recipient’s account and exemptions.

For the cheapest way to send money internationally, compare the usable recipient amount rather than treating a zero sending fee as a complete price.

Funding time, transfer time and access to the money

Phone-number delivery can be quick once the sending service has your money, but a wallet cannot credit a payment that is still waiting for funding.

TapTap Send’s Nequi and DaviPlata payments generally arrive within minutes, with these wallet payments available around the clock.

A first payment can take longer while identification is checked, so complete that before relying on the fastest estimate for an urgent transfer.

Cash withdrawal then depends on the wallet’s process and local access, rather than the time it took to credit the account.

For instant international money transfers, agree whether your recipient needs spendable wallet money or physical cash before choosing solely on the delivery estimate.

Mobile money transfer limits

Your sending service’s limit, the wallet’s receiving allowance and its available balance space can each stop a payment.

Restriction

What it means

TapTap Send Yape limit

Up to S/500 per phone-based payment

Yape remittance receipt in soles

Up to S/3,000 each and S/12,000 monthly

Nequi individual remittance

Up to US$2,000 per movement

Nequi monthly remittances

US$2,000 low-value deposit or US$5,000 savings account

Wise GCash payment

Up to ₱50,000 per transfer

Orange Money Europe top-up

Up to €1,000 each on a full account

The euro amount must fit the converted receiving limit, which is why the Yape example uses €100 instead of the other wallets’ €500.

For a payment above the wallet’s allowance, compare bank delivery rather than send repeated transfers intended to bypass verification or account restrictions.

How to make a mobile money transfer

Get the exact receiving account

Ask which wallet your recipient uses and copy its registered mobile number, rather than assume their ordinary contact number identifies the account.

Check the limit in the receiving currency

For Yape or a limited Nequi account, confirm the local-currency amount and remaining allowance before choosing how much to send in euros.

Compare the final wallet amount

Select the named wallet when checking prices, because a bank-deposit quote or cash-pickup offer can produce a different cost.

Confirm access before an urgent payment

Agree whether your recipient will spend from the wallet or withdraw cash, then check the account is verified and ready for that use.

What if the payment is pending, missing or sent to the wrong account?

If the payment remains pending, contact the sending company with its reference and check whether it needs documents or confirmation of funding.

For a delivered transfer missing from the wallet, the recipient should contact the wallet while you ask the sending service to trace it.

Report a wrong number immediately, because neither a familiar phone contact nor a completed payment guarantees that the money can be recovered.

Is mobile money transfer safe?

Use an authorised transfer business and your recipient’s registered wallet, checking the legal company behind the app if you are unfamiliar with it.

Banco de España’s registers help identify payment and electronic-money businesses operating in Spain, including eligible services authorised elsewhere in Europe.

Electronic-money accounts have different protections from bank deposits, so do not assume every balance has Spain’s bank deposit guarantee.

If someone asks you to change the receiving number or pay a release charge, verify the request separately before sending more money.

Check the international sending cost for your destination, then confirm the recipient’s wallet and any charge for accessing the balance.

Compare transfers from Spain

Enter your EUR amount and destination to compare available transfer rates, then check wallet delivery with your selected service.

Our methodology & why trust us

We assessed the transfer tasks behind mobile money searches, including Latin American receiving wallets, a euro wallet available from Spain and Bizum’s separate bank-payment network.

Our comparisons use named receiving accounts and compatible payment amounts, keeping researched wallet charges separate from international fee and exchange-rate data.

We assessed Spanish funding options alongside recipient account requirements, including the smaller Yape payment and the euro balance available through Orange Money Europe.

Our approach to reviewing money transfer companies explains how costs, receiving methods and account features inform these selections.
