How Does Mobile Money Transfer Work in the UK

Why trust usDisclosure
Table of Contents

You can make a mobile money transfer from the UK without opening a foreign wallet, using a supporting company to pay your recipient's existing account.

Pay in pounds through the company's accepted bank or card method, then choose M-PESA, GCash or another named receiving network.

I suggest comparing a smaller payment's full cost before increasing it to remove a sending fee, particularly when the wallet has a limited receiving allowance.

What is a mobile wallet?

A mobile wallet holds a balance your recipient can spend or move using the services attached to that account.

Bank apps and card payment tools also let you pay through your phone, with different accounts and receiving methods behind those payments.

Mobile wallets

GCash holds Philippine pesos that your recipient can use for supported payments, local transfers and withdrawals after the money arrives.

A wallet's available balance and receiving allowance determine whether it can accept your transfer, even when the sending company accepts the amount.

Mobile money

Mobile money often identifies an account through its registered phone number, with networks such as M-PESA supporting payments and agent withdrawals.

The number must belong to the correct network and account, so selecting Kenya alone does not identify your recipient's M-PESA wallet.

Money transfer apps

International money transfer apps let you arrange an overseas payment, convert pounds and choose an available bank, cash or wallet receiving method.

Remitly and Wise can deliver to supported wallets, while the recipient accesses the payment through the wallet's own account.

Mobile banking apps

Your banking app manages money in your bank account and can send domestic payments or fund an international transfer service.

For holding several currencies yourself, multi-currency accounts offer a different account choice from sending pounds into someone else's local wallet.

Apple Pay and Google Pay

Apple Pay and Google Pay can fund a supported transfer using your linked card, depending on the company's accepted payment methods.

Selecting that payment option does not determine whether the recipient receives money in a bank account, as cash or inside a wallet.

Who handles the international transfer?

The company you pay in the UK converts your pounds, provides the transfer reference and arranges delivery through the selected receiving network.

The wallet then gives your recipient access to the local balance, including any payments or withdrawals supported by their account.

For example, when you send money from the UK to Kenya through Remitly, M-PESA can receive the shillings without taking your UK payment directly.

If the transfer is delayed, contact the sending company first, while a locked recipient account needs the wallet's support team.

Choose the wallet delivery method when booking, because sending to the same person's bank account creates a different payment with different details.

Where do you want the money to arrive?

These five choices cover established recipient networks, with the recipient's existing account deciding which one you can use.

M-PESA in Kenya

M-PESA makes local spending and agent cash access straightforward

M-PESA is Safaricom's Kenyan mobile-money service, so your recipient needs an active registered account attached to their Kenyan number.

I like this option when they already pay through M-PESA, because the remittance arrives where they can use it without another account transfer.

If they need cash instead, include the withdrawal charge when comparing the payment with a bank deposit or cash collection.

Sending to M-PESA from the UK

Wise, Remitly, WorldRemit and TapTap Send support sending pounds into a Kenyan M-PESA account using the recipient's registered details.

Remitly charges no sending fee for its UK M-PESA transfers, although the exchange rate still affects how many shillings arrive.

Use these £500 wallet-delivery options to compare the converted amount before choosing how to send money to Kenya.

How your recipient receives and uses the money

The payment goes into the recipient's M-PESA account, where they can make supported local payments or withdraw through an agent.

Wise has a KSh250,000 limit per M-PESA transfer and KSh500,000 daily limit, with the recipient's available account capacity also applying.

For a large overseas payment, compare delivery to their bank rather than assuming that several wallet transfers will fit their remaining allowance.

GCash in the Philippines

GCash keeps the remittance available for peso payments

GCash is a Philippine peso wallet for everyday spending, bill payments and supported transfers to local banks and other wallets.

Your recipient needs an active verified account, and cashing out or moving the money afterwards can create an additional charge.

My suggestion is to use direct GCash delivery when they intend to spend the pesos there, rather than send them through a bank first.

Sending to GCash from the UK

You can pay a GCash wallet through Wise, Remitly, WorldRemit or TapTap Send, entering the recipient's registered name and mobile number.

These £500 options compare wallet delivery when you send money from the UK to the Philippines, rather than a bank deposit.

How your recipient receives and uses the money

With TapTap Send, a first-time international recipient must open GCash and accept the incoming-remittance terms before accessing the payment.

The pesos can then stay in the wallet for payments, or move through GCash's available bank-transfer and cash-out channels.

Wise and WorldRemit cap each wallet transfer at ₱50,000, while TapTap Send allows up to ₱100,000 into GCash from the UK.

Those service caps are separate from the recipient's wallet allowance, so a higher account limit does not increase every company's transfer limit.

bKash in Bangladesh

Check how much cash the recipient needs from bKash

bKash holds taka for local payments and transfers, with supported overseas remittances arriving in the recipient's registered Bangladeshi account.

The balance can fund payments directly, but withdrawing cash has its own tariff that changes the cost of supporting someone abroad.

For remittance ATM withdrawals through participating banks, taking out Tk5,000 costs Tk35, so compare that with how the recipient would otherwise collect money.

Sending to bKash from the UK

Wise, Remitly, WorldRemit and TapTap Send offer bKash delivery, with the registered name and number identifying the account that receives your payment.

For £500, compare how many taka arrive when you send money from the UK to Bangladesh and select mobile-money delivery.

How your recipient receives and uses the money

A supported remittance credits the bKash balance, allowing the recipient to use local payment functions or an available cash-out channel.

TapTap Send allows up to Tk250,000 per wallet transfer and Tk450,000 per month, alongside the recipient's account restrictions.

I suggest asking whether the recipient wants to withdraw everything, since a larger converted amount can lose its advantage after cash-out charges.

MTN MoMo in Ghana

Send to the recipient's personal MTN wallet

MTN MoMo gives your recipient a Ghanaian mobile-money balance for supported local payments and withdrawals through the network.

The correct operator is essential, because another Ghanaian mobile-money number does not become an MTN account when you choose the destination.

This works well for family support when the recipient already uses MoMo, with cash withdrawal charges included in your cost check.

Sending to MTN MoMo from the UK

Remitly, WorldRemit, TapTap Send and Western Union support UK sending to MTN Mobile Money, using the recipient's registered account details.

The comparison below uses £500 for sending money from the UK to Ghana, with mobile-money receipt rather than cash pickup.

How your recipient receives and uses the money

The cedis arrive in the MoMo balance, where the recipient can spend them through supported payments or withdraw when they need cash.

WorldRemit's international MTN transfers go to personal wallets, so this option is unsuitable for paying a Ghanaian business wallet.

WorldRemit and TapTap Send have a GH₵15,000 per-transfer limit, while the recipient's account tier can impose a lower allowance.

JazzCash in Pakistan

JazzCash suits payments that fit the recipient's account allowance

JazzCash is a Pakistani mobile account that supports local payments, transfers and cash access alongside incoming international remittances.

Your recipient's verification level affects their allowance, so ask them to check their account before choosing an amount in pounds.

I suggest taking particular care with a larger family payment, because the converted rupees can exceed a limit that looks generous locally.

Sending to JazzCash from the UK

Remitly and TapTap Send support direct JazzCash delivery, with the recipient's registered name and number identifying their wallet.

TapTap Send charges £0.99 for UK-to-Pakistan payments below £125, with no sending fee from £125 upwards.

A £100 payment therefore has a £0.99 sending fee, but the exchange rate and recipient's account allowance still affect your choice.

For sending money from the UK to Pakistan, compare a bank deposit as well if the wallet cannot accept the converted amount.

How your recipient receives and uses the money

The recipient can use the credited JazzCash balance for supported local payments, move money to another account or withdraw cash.

Bank-account details and a JazzCash mobile number identify different receiving methods, so agree which account should receive the money before booking.

Check the selected service's transaction cap together with the wallet's daily and monthly allowance, including money the recipient has already received.

What about mobile transfers within the UK?

For paying someone else's UK bank account, your existing banking app and Faster Payments can handle the payment without an overseas wallet.

That domestic payment may also fund a transfer company, which then converts your pounds and delivers money to the foreign account.

My suggestion is to keep those two stages separate when comparing costs, especially if paying by card changes the international company's fee.

How much does mobile money transfer cost?

The sending fee is only one part of the cost, alongside the exchange rate, payment-method charges and any withdrawal fee.

A zero-fee payment can deliver fewer pesos or shillings than another service, so compare the recipient amount for the same total pound payment.

For regular support, look beyond a first-transfer promotion and check what the next payment will cost at the normal rate.

If your recipient will spend the wallet balance directly, a cash-out charge may be avoidable without changing the sending service.

How long does a wallet transfer take?

Wallet delivery can take minutes, but the transfer company must first receive your payment and complete any necessary identity checks.

A bank-funded payment and a card-funded payment can have different estimates, even when both finish in the same recipient wallet.

Check the arrival estimate before paying, then allow separately for any cash collection your recipient needs after the balance is credited.

For an urgent transfer, choose the funding method and wallet option together rather than relying on the company's general delivery headline.

How much can you send to a mobile wallet?

Three limits can affect your payment, including the sending service's cap, the recipient's receiving allowance and the space left in their balance.

A daily allowance may already be partly used, while a monthly limit can include payments received from other people.

Ask the recipient to check the account before paying, especially when supporting several expenses together or sending a larger amount than usual.

If a wallet limit prevents the payment, international money transfer services also offer eligible bank deposits and cash collection options.

How to make a mobile money transfer from the UK

Confirm the recipient account

Ask for the wallet's name, destination, registered mobile number and account-holder name, checking that the recipient can access the account.

Check the available allowance

Have the recipient check their remaining receiving allowance and balance capacity, then compare those with the service's converted transfer amount.

Compare the full payment

Choose wallet delivery and compare the received amount for your pound budget, including any UK funding and recipient cash-out charge.

Pay through the selected service

Complete any identity check and pay using an accepted method, then keep the transfer reference and the estimated arrival time.

Confirm receipt before repeating

Check that the money has reached the intended wallet before sending another payment, and contact the sending company if the status needs clarification.

What if the money is missing or the number is wrong?

Check the sending service's status and reference first, then confirm the recipient is checking the wallet you selected rather than their bank account.

If you entered the wrong number, contact the sending company immediately because a completed wallet payment may be difficult to recover.

For a locked account or missing access after receipt, the recipient should use the wallet's official support and account-recovery process.

Keep the amount, payment time and recipient details with your reference, so support can investigate the original transfer without another payment.

Is mobile money transfer safe?

Check that the company taking your UK payment is appropriately authorised, and use the FCA's register to verify its identity and contact details.

Payment and electronic-money firms safeguard customer funds under different arrangements from bank deposits, so do not assume the same protection applies.

The overseas wallet has its own account rules, which also affect access if the recipient loses their phone or changes their number.

Confirm changed payment details through a separate conversation, and never share your banking code or the recipient's wallet PIN with someone offering help.

Before paying, compare your intended wallet and amount with the best money transfer services from the UK to check the available delivery choices.

Compare the cost of your overseas payment in pounds, then confirm wallet delivery before checking the recipient’s separate cash-out charges.

Our methodology & why trust us

We matched UK sending eligibility with named-wallet delivery, then compared account functions, service limits and the costs of using the money after receipt.

Our comparisons use MoneyTransfers data for international companies, while wallet charges come from their product tariffs and account information.

I have focused on wallets your recipient can use after receiving the payment, with our review methodology explaining how we assess transfer services.
