Currencies Direct
Account-manager help with app transfers and tracking
You need a personal quote to judge Currencies Direct’s cost, because a transfer without a separate fee still includes a margin in the exchange rate.
You book a £100,000, £500,000 or £1 million transfer by phone, then track its progress through the app or your online account.
The app lets you make transfers up to £50,000, check live rates, edit recipients, view your multi-currency wallets and add money to them.
You can buy currency ahead of an overseas purchase and hold it in a multi-currency account, then pay when the recipient needs it.
Currencies Direct has no overall transfer maximum, but you still need to arrange how your bank will send the full amount.
Part of the transfer
What you get or need to agree
Service
Account manager, phone booking for larger transfers and payments to 120+ countries
App
Track transfers, manage recipients, check rates and add to currency wallets
Currency tools
Spot transfers, forwards, limit orders and rate alerts
Cost
No separate transfer fee, FX margin included in the quoted rate
Funding
Agreed GBP bank-transfer instructions and funding deadline
Documents
Identity checks and evidence explaining the source of your funds
Forward commitment
Agreed deposit, possible top-ups and a date to pay the remaining balance
A forward contract commits you to the payment, and you may have to add money to your deposit if exchange rates move.
Cancelling can leave you owing money, so check that you can make the deposit and final bank payment before accepting the contract.
The £50,000 and £250,000 examples below show the recipient amount after fees across several currencies, alongside the exchange rate used for conversion.
For a large payment involving Australia or another distant time zone, OFX’s round-the-clock support makes it easier to discuss the transfer.
I think it suits you if you travel a lot and handle international transfers from your UK bank, with a separate service for your UK business payments.
Fiberpay
Named currency accounts with professional coordination
Fiberpay is great for a seven-figure property or investment-related payment involving appointed lawyers, agents or an investment fund.
Its own-name currency account and dedicated IBAN let you receive money before converting or paying it onwards, with local collection accounts in several major markets.
You can check balances and payment history online while preparing the money for a purchase that has not reached its payment date.
Fiberpay can discuss the payment directly with your appointed professionals, reducing the instructions you need to pass between your lawyer, agent and payment company.
In my opinion, Fiberpay is the strongest option on this list for coordinating a payment with your appointed professionals.
Before paying into the account, check which currencies you can hold, any charges and how long you can leave the money there.
Part of the transfer
What you get or need to agree
Service
Dedicated account manager and liaison with appointed receiving professionals
Receiving
Own-name IBAN and local collection accounts in the UK, Europe and other supported markets
Holding and control
Currency balances, online conversions, beneficiary payments and payment reporting
Currency tools
Personal property forwards up to 12 months, indicative rate alerts
Cost
Written conversion/payment quote and any account or holding charges
Process
Agree receiving route, complete checks, fund, convert or hold, then authorise payment
The account’s payment reach covers over 100 currencies, but that does not mean you can hold every currency or receive each through local details.
Property forwards can fix the rate for up to 12 months, while rate alerts notify you of an indicative market level without executing a payment.
Check which payment partner holds your money, because the agreement with that partner sets the protection, with Currencycloud and Sciopay among Fiberpay’s UK partners.
The account and professional coordination are the reasons to choose Fiberpay, especially when your purchase involves several people and the money needs preparing in advance.
Wise
A large bank-funded transfer you manage yourself online
Wise suits a straightforward payment where you want to add the recipient, pay from your bank and follow the transfer online.
You also have access to a specialised large-transfer team above £50,000, so using its online process does not mean handling every issue alone.
That support threshold is separate from the volume discount, which starts when your eligible monthly conversions exceed £20,000.
I think this is a great option for moving savings between your own accounts or sending under £100,000 when you have the documents ready.
You can manage the payment online, provided you do not need a forward contract to fix the rate for a later date.
Wise supports sending from GBP up to £20 million per transfer depending on the payment method, although destination limits and your bank’s funding cap still apply.
For the amounts in this guide, I think Wise’s maximum is more than enough, provided your payment method and destination support the full amount.
The £20 million ceiling applies per transfer, so it does not mean you reach the limit simply by making several payments in a month.
You can pay Wise in GBP through Faster Payments, Bacs or CHAPS, giving you bank-transfer options for amounts too large to pay by card.
Part of the transfer
What you get or need to agree
Service
Online setup and tracking, specialised large-transfer support above £50,000

Cost

Wise’s volume pricing applies in brackets, so a £500,000 transfer does not receive the highest applicable discount on every pound.
Your earlier eligible conversions in the calendar month also affect the fee, so get a quote for the full amount you plan to send.
Here’s a £25,000 comparison of Wise and three brokers, though you need a quote for your full amount when arranging a larger payment.

HSBC UK
A larger payment through your existing bank
If you already use HSBC Premier, you can arrange international payments up to £10 million by phone, giving you a bank route for the amounts in this guide.
The standard online and mobile international-payment limit is £50,000, while ordinary phone banking has a £10,000 limit.
Global Money also has a £50,000 daily limit, so it is a different product from the larger Premier phone payment.
If you do not have Premier, speak to a branch about how it can send your full amount and when the recipient will receive it.
Part of the transfer
What you get or need to agree
Service
International payments from your HSBC account, with phone or branch channels
Larger payment
Premier phone channel up to £10 million, other branch arrangements agreed individually
Standard channel caps
£50,000 online/mobile, £10,000 ordinary phone, £50,000 daily Global Money
Sending fee
£0 for qualifying payments, otherwise generally £5, with account exemptions
Conversion and deductions
HSBC exchange rate includes a conversion charge, recipient/intermediary costs depend on the route
Process
Confirm the channel, beneficiary instructions, charge option and full recipient amount
HSBC makes sense if you want to send directly from your existing account and its full quote meets your budget and payment date.
You still need to verify the recipient’s details, even when the payment comes directly from a bank account you have used for years.
For a same-currency payment, compare transfer and receiving charges directly, since an FX-rate comparison will not answer that cost question.
Why use a specialist instead of your bank or an online company?
An account manager helps you decide when to exchange the money and how to pay it, especially when a mistake could delay a purchase.
For example, a property payment can involve an initial deposit and a later balance, with different deadlines and an exact amount required in euros.
That is when I want someone to discuss the rate with and follow up if the payment date or recipient’s instructions change.
I have spoken with broker account managers and found them knowledgeable, so I prefer having that contact when a payment involves more than a simple bank transfer.
A manager cannot guarantee a better future exchange rate, skip the required checks or control when the receiving bank makes the money available.
Using your bank
Your bank can send the payment from the account already holding the money, avoiding the separate funding step needed when using a specialist.
HSBC Premier lets you send up to £10 million by phone, so your bank may already support the larger payment you need.
HSBC includes a conversion charge in its exchange rate, while brokers also price through a rate margin and Wise charges a separate conversion fee.
Compare how much the recipient gets after the agreed charges, because a small sending fee can sit alongside a more expensive exchange rate.
If you already hold euros or dollars, keeping that currency through an approved bank route may be preferable to converting it twice.
Using a self-service company
Wise lets you manage a large transfer online, with bank funding and a specialised support team when the amount exceeds £50,000.
This suits you if you are paying your own account and can handle the bank details and requested documents yourself.
A broker is more attractive when you want to fix a rate in advance or discuss how to meet an exact foreign-currency bill.
Mobile money transfers from the UK can suit smaller family payments, but wallet allowances can make them unsuitable for the larger bank payments here.
What can you use a large international transfer for?
Buying property abroad
When buying property abroad, confirm the payment instructions with your lawyer or agent before deciding whether to exchange now or fix a future rate.
Prepare the completion statement and verify the solicitor’s account details, including the exact currency amount and date the money must be available.
Relocating abroad
Have your destination account ready and keep records explaining how your savings built up, so you can answer questions about the money’s source.
Separate the amount you need on arrival from funds that can wait until the destination account is fully ready.
Paying university fees
Check the institution’s payment route, student reference and invoice, including the date the money must reach its account.
A university may require its own payment platform or reference, so verify that the proposed transfer route can pay the invoice correctly.
Moving savings or an inheritance
Confirm account ownership and prepare the bank trail, with sale or probate records where they explain how you received the money.
An inheritance may need probate or estate-distribution records alongside the bank trail, because an account balance alone does not explain where the money came from.
Sending a large family gift
Check that the company accepts the recipient’s account and prepare documents explaining the gift, alongside any tax you need to consider.
Making business payments
For supplier payments, payroll or money going into a company, use international business transfers to check the business account and payment options.
What will your large transfer cost?
Compare the same GBP payment and the amount the recipient can use, rather than judging prices from different sending amounts.
For a £500,000 payment, a 0.5% difference in total conversion cost represents £2,500, making small percentage differences worth checking.
Since exchange rates change, compare the available results for your amount and destination before accepting a quote for the payment.
The services above are my picks for the support they offer, while the comparison below ranks the available results by cost.
Read the delivery-time field for your currency pair and amount, because the comparison’s row order follows cost rather than fastest delivery.
Allow extra time to open your account and complete document checks, because the delivery estimate does not cover every stage of preparation.
Stage
What can delay your payment
Account opening
Identity verification, residence/purpose eligibility and requested records
Document review
Unclear source evidence, missing sale/probate records or additional questions
GBP funding
Your bank’s channel cap, cut-off, fraud review or incorrect reference
Conversion and sending
Payment due under the contract, cleared funds and confirmed recipient instructions
Recipient credit
Local banking hours, receiving checks, intermediary routing or unmatched invoice reference
OFX major-currency transfers usually take one to two business days after it sends the money, so check receipt after its confirmation email.
Your account manager can help you plan when to pay and chase missing instructions, but the receiving bank may still need its own checks.
CHAPS can send a large GBP payment from your bank, provided its cut-off and account rules let the money arrive by the company’s deadline.
For a property or tuition payment, I'd say prepare early and leave time to answer document questions before the recipient needs the money.
How much money can I send abroad from the UK?
The UK has no general legal amount ceiling for an electronic international transfer, but the company, account and funding bank can each impose limits.
Sanctions can prohibit payments to certain people or organisations, and the company must accept your payment purpose and destination.
Before arranging a large payment, check each of the following limits:
Limit
What to check
Per transfer
Maximum for one instruction, including currency and destination restrictions
Daily or rolling
Other payments using the same daily allowance, weekly cap or account tier
Company channel
Whether a larger payment needs phone, branch or account-manager approval
Funding bank
How much you can send to the company, using your account and chosen channel
Recipient
Account/currency eligibility, incoming caps and local purpose requirements
Currencies Direct and TorFX have no overall transfer maximum, while OFX’s account terms allow individual daily transaction limits to be applied.
Wise’s GBP ceiling can reach £20 million depending on funding method, which does not override a lower destination limit or the bank’s payment allowance.
CHAPS has no minimum or maximum payment amount, although your bank still decides whether you can use it and what it charges.
If your bank’s online limit is too low, arrange a larger payment or an agreed instalment schedule before accepting the exchange contract.
Paying in stages still requires the same checks, and every instalment must arrive in time to meet the contract and recipient’s deadline.
Source-of-funds checks ask where the money came from, so moving it through another UK account does not replace the documents explaining its origin.
The cash declaration rules apply when carrying qualifying cash across the border, and do not set a maximum for electronic transfers.
The requested documents should explain where the money came from and why you are sending it, with a bank trail connecting the source to the funding account.
You may need photo identification and proof of address to open the account, followed by documents explaining the payment itself.
Origin or purpose
Records you may be asked to provide
Property sale proceeds
Sale contract/completion statement and bank statement showing receipt
Inheritance
Probate, estate letter or distribution statement and the corresponding bank credit
Accumulated earnings
Payslips, tax records or statements showing how the savings built up
Investment sale
Sale/account statement and bank record linking the proceeds
Property or tuition payment
Receiving professional’s completion statement or institution’s invoice
Source of wealth is a separate question about how you built up your wider wealth, which the company may also ask you to explain.
Send your documents through the company’s secure channel, making sure the names, amounts and bank entries are clear enough to read.
Agree the bank funding route
For the amounts in this guide, arrange a bank transfer and check the account details and payment reference before sending any money.
Wise accepts GBP through Faster Payments, Bacs and CHAPS, while a broker gives you the account details for the currency you are paying.
Check whether you can pay from a sole, joint or third-party account, especially if a solicitor or estate administrator holds the money.
Avoid sending from an unapproved account, because the company may need more checks or return the money before it can complete your transfer.
If you already hold the receiving currency, ask for a same-currency payment quote and the correct funding details rather than accepting an unnecessary conversion.
An agreed instalment schedule can help with a bank limit, but the company needs the full amount before it can make your payment.
Confirm exactly how the recipient will receive the money
Get the recipient’s full name and bank details, including the IBAN or account and routing numbers, plus SWIFT/BIC where required.
For a solicitor or institution, confirm the client-account details and reference, plus the exact amount and date the money must be available.
Sending GBP to an account expecting EUR can leave the receiving bank to convert it, changing the final amount and cost.
Ask whether intermediary or receiving-bank charges will be deducted, and how the company will make sure a fixed invoice is paid in full.
If you use a named currency account, check which currencies it can hold and whose terms protect the money while it stays there.
Fiberpay’s account and professional coordination suit a payment where you need to prepare the currency before your lawyer or agent is ready to receive it.
How to send and track the payment
Confirm the receiving instructions
Confirm the recipient’s currency, exact account details, reference and deadline, with the appointed professional where a property or institutional payment requires it.
Complete checks and arrange funding
Provide the requested identity and source documents, then check your bank can send the full amount before the company needs it.
Verify beneficiary details
Check the payment instructions through a trusted contact method, especially if a solicitor’s details change or you receive a new account by email.
A small test payment can confirm a permitted receiving route when time allows, but it does not remove checks on the later transfer.
Accept the quote or contract
Check how much you pay and the recipient gets, then confirm the quote expiry and any deposit, payment deadline or cancellation cost.
Fund through the approved account
Use the supplied account details and reference, keep your bank confirmation and ask the company to confirm it has received the money.
Track the payment through to receipt
Track the payment, retain the transaction reference and have the recipient confirm the money is available against the correct invoice or account.
If the company has sent the payment but receipt is overdue, ask it to trace the money and share the reference with the recipient’s bank.
How your money is protected
Check the company’s legal name and payment permissions on the Financial Services Register, even if you recognise the name it trades under.

Authorised payment institutions and electronic money institutions use safeguarding for relevant client funds, with money separated or protected through an appropriate guarantee.
Safeguarding and bank-deposit protection
Safeguarding differs from FSCS bank-deposit protection, and recovery following a company failure can take time or be reduced by insolvency costs.
An eligible UK bank deposit has FSCS protection, but check how money is protected when you move it through a payment company.
With Fiberpay, check which payment partner holds your money and how it protects the balance before leaving funds there for a future payment.
Check how a forward deposit is protected separately, because its terms can differ from those covering money held for an ordinary payment.
FCA authorisation cannot protect you from every wrong recipient instruction, so verify the account details independently before making a large property payment.
If the transfer goes wrong, contact the company promptly and use its complaints process, with the Financial Ombudsman Service available for eligible unresolved complaints.
I suggest comparing the complete cost of your large transfer before committing to a quote or arranging the funding.
Compare rates for your large transfer from the UK
Enter your destination and full GBP amount, then compare the available rates before agreeing the payment and funding terms.
Remaining questions before you send
Will I pay tax on the transfer?
The transfer amount alone does not determine the tax you owe, which depends on where the money came from and the countries involved.
You usually do not pay Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax when you receive an inheritance, although later income or sales can create tax bills.
A gift can affect the giver’s Inheritance Tax position, but a tax exemption amount is not a legal maximum you can transfer.
For savings or sale proceeds, check any tax on the original income or gain, including tax abroad, separately from transferring the money.
Can I cancel after accepting the exchange rate?
An accepted exchange contract can be binding before you fund it, so contact the company immediately if you need to cancel or change it.
You may owe money if you cancel, and a payment already sent needs a recall request that may not recover the funds.
Can I arrange everything on the completion day?
I suggest preparing before completion day, because documents, your bank payment and the recipient’s checks can delay an otherwise quick currency transfer.
Open the account and confirm the instructions beforehand, then agree when to send the payment so the recipient has cleared funds in time.
