We only list companies that are trustworthy and appropriately licensed. Our aim is to give you a comprehensive view of the regulated money transfer marketplace.

MoneyTransfers aims to help users find the best money transfer provider for their needs. To support our free service, we may earn a commission from some of the providers listed in our search results. The commission may also impact the ordering of the providers shown. Our reviews are independent from this and are based on our editorial policy, research and testing of dozens of remittance providers on the market.

Revolut

Best for travel features

Revolut brings currency exchange and travel tools into one app, but its free account has limits.

I’d start with Standard and only upgrade if the extra benefits justify the subscription (since it is a bit pricey):

Standard has no monthly fee, it allows up to £1,000 of weekday exchanges per monthly allowance without an additional exchange fee, with a 1% fair-use fee above that.

Standard also charges 1% for weekend exchanges.

Revolut uses its own exchange rate, so no additional fee doesn’t automatically mean the cheapest conversion.

Use the dropdown to add more currencies and check the rates, or with your amount.

The travel benefits go beyond the card and exchange rates.

You can buy eSIM data and access travel booking features in the app.

Premium and higher plans remove the additional weekend exchange fee, while travel insurance is included on Metal and Ultra, subject to eligibility and policy conditions.

Check the trip-duration limits before paying for a plan for a long stay abroad.

For insurance, the qualifying plan must be active when you book, and you generally need to pay at least 75% of both your main transport and accommodation costs through Revolut.

Buying a plan just before departure may not cover a trip you've already booked.

Pros

  • Free Standard plan, with paid options for higher allowances.
  • Manage foreign currencies and travel extras in one app.
  • Very competitive on spending under £1,000 per month abroad.

Cons

  • Standard exchange fees depend on the amount and timing.
  • Standard's fee-free cash allowance ends at £200 or five withdrawals per month.

I personally take my Revolut card with me every time I’m going on holiday, and combine it with my Monzo and Wise cards for higher ATM withdrawal limits, or as a backup when one of the cards are not accepted.

Monzo

Best for budgeting

Monzo is useful if your main problem is keeping bill money separate from money you can spend.

The free account covers the basics, although some of the more flexible budgeting tools require a paid plan.

Pots let you divide money between purposes, such as rent, annual bills or a holiday.

You can pay direct debits and standing orders from a Bills Pot. Virtual cards linked to Pots require Extra, Perks or Max, so check whether you need that feature before upgrading.

Ordinary Pots and interest-paying Savings Pots are different products.

For travel, Monzo uses Mastercard's exchange rate for foreign card payments without adding a currency conversion fee.

International bank transfers have separate rates and charges shown in the app.

Pros

  • Useful bill budgeting without a monthly account fee.
  • Cash deposits and in-app cheque deposits are available.

Cons

  • Virtual cards linked to Pots require a paid plan.
  • Cash deposits cost £1 each on the free account, and cash withdrawal allowances vary by location.

My Monzo is my favourite card to use within the UK, and I take it with me abroad when I need to increase my combined ATM limit.

Wise

Best for managing money across currencies

Wise is my pick when you need to receive and keep foreign currencies, although it isn't a bank.

It is especially useful when money comes in and goes out in the same currency, so you don't have to convert everything into pounds first.

Wise has one of the best multi-currency accounts, with it you can hold more than 40 currencies and receive money using account details for supported currencies.

Receiving methods vary, so check whether your sender can use a local payment or needs a wire or SWIFT transfer.

There is no monthly subscription, but to get a physical card it costs £7 (one time fee).

Wise converts at the mid-market rate and charges a separate fee, starting from 0.33%.

Cash withdrawals are free of Wise fees up to £250 monthly, then 2.69% applies to the amount above that allowance (but local ATMs may add additional fees).

Pros

  • Low fees for international money transfers.
  • Access to a multi-currency account with a debit card.
  • Receive 40 currencies into a single account.

Cons

  • Multi-currency card costs £7 (one-off).
  • No FSCS protection (but money is safeguarded instead).

Wise or Revolut for your transfer?

Both Revolut and Wise offer international transfers, multi-currency account, a debit card, and multiple currencies in one account.

But the fees and exchange rates will vary by destination and the amount.

Here is a comparison of both for different countries and amounts.

This is based on Revolut's standard plan and does not include any additional costs or fees (like subscription fees, weekend fees, or out of usage fees).

Starling Bank

Best for everyday UK banking

Starling is my pick for a main account if you want everyday banking without a monthly subscription.

Its main benefit is the practical coverage, including bills, cash deposits and joint banking.

Spaces separate money for different purposes, and Bills Manager helps keep committed spending apart from your available balance.

Support is available by phone and chat around the clock.

A joint account can cover shared bills, although both applicants need their own Starling personal account first.

Starling doesn't add a fee for foreign card spending or overseas ATM withdrawals, although withdrawal limits and ATM-operator charges still apply.

Sending money abroad is different. International transfers cost 0.4% for conversion plus a delivery fee, and aren't available at weekends or on bank holidays.

Pros

  • Free domestic payments and useful tools for household bills.
  • Personal and joint accounts without a monthly fee.

Cons

  • Cash deposits are only free within the annual allowance.
  • International bank transfers have fees and operating hours.

I’d give Starling a close look before paying another bank for basic budgeting features.

Monzo's paid tools may suit you better, but decide which features you need first.

Chase

Best for cashback on eligible spending

Chase can pay you back on everyday purchases, but the cashback needs more attention than simply opening an account.

I’d choose it if your normal spending and savings already fit the requirements.

It pays 2% on eligible GBP card purchases in the UK and Channel Islands, up to £20 a month.

Categories include groceries, restaurants and everyday transport.

After the initial grace period, you must have made at least 15 qualifying payments and kept at least £1,000 across Chase saver accounts each day of the preceding calendar month.

Direct debits count towards the payment requirement but don't earn cashback (merchant categories determine which purchases qualify).

The free current account also uses Mastercard's rate for overseas card spending without an added Chase conversion fee.

However, Chase doesn't support sending or receiving international bank transfers.

You would need another service for those.

Pros

  • Cashback on eligible purchases without a monthly account fee.
  • Useful overseas card spending alongside domestic rewards.

Cons

  • Cashback is capped and requires qualifying activity and savings.
  • No international bank transfers.

Before moving savings to qualify, compare the cashback you expect with any interest you would give up elsewhere.

You don't need to reach the £20 cap for Chase to be worthwhile, but it shouldn't require spending more than you otherwise would.

Monese

Best for newcomers without standard proof of address

Monese is worth considering if missing address documents make other applications difficult.

Its fees are harder to justify if you can already open a mainstream free account.

You can apply without standard proof-of-address documents, a credit history or a fixed income.

Identity checks still apply, and acceptance isn't guaranteed.

That makes it relevant to recent arrivals, rather than automatically the best account for every international student.

The Pay As You Go plan has no monthly subscription, but charges £0.99 for an incoming bank transfer and £1.29 for an outgoing domestic transfer.

Everyday costs £2.95 monthly and includes free incoming bank transfers, plus two outgoing domestic transfers each month, then £1 each.

These costs matter if you're regularly moving money between accounts.

Pros

  • An application route without standard address documents.
  • Supports salary payments and direct debits.

Cons

  • The free plan charges for routine incoming and outgoing transfers.
  • It is an e-money account, with safeguarding rather than bank-deposit FSCS protection.

I’d use the easier application requirements as the reason to consider Monese, but low-cost travel and everyday transactions aren't its strongest case (Monzo, Revolut, and Wise are all better).

Online accounts for business

International payments and everyday UK banking don't always need to sit with the same company.

Wise Business

Best for businesses with overseas clients or suppliers

I’d suggest Wise Business as a starting point if you get paid in foreign currencies or regularly pay overseas suppliers.

The full account has a £50 one-off setup fee, so include that in your first-year costs alongside transaction fees, but there is no monthly subscription.

The useful part is being able to keep currencies between payments.

If a customer pays you in euros and your next supplier invoice is also in euros, you can use that balance without converting through pounds.

Supported receiving methods differ by currency, and some wire or SWIFT receipts cost extra.

Batch payments help with multiple invoices, while team permissions and accounting integrations reduce the work around payments.

Those features make more sense for a business handling international activity regularly than for a sole trader with one UK client.

Here's how much you can expect to get with Wise Business for different currencies and amounts (excluding the £50 fee):

Pros

  • Hold customer payments for later spending in the same currency.
  • Batch payments and team access without a monthly plan fee.

Cons

  • £50 setup cost for the full account, plus applicable transaction fees.
  • Ordinary balances are safeguarded, not FSCS-protected bank deposits.

I’d consider Wise Business alongside a UK business bank account if you also need services such as cash deposits. It doesn't have to replace every part of your business banking.

Starling Business

Best for everyday UK business banking without a monthly fee

Starling Business suits businesses whose routine payments are mainly in pounds.

It has no monthly account fee and includes free Faster Payments, direct debits and standing orders.

Spaces help set aside tax and overheads, and receipt capture keeps supporting paperwork with transactions.

Cash and cheque deposits are available, so it covers needs that a foreign-currency account alone may not.

Cash deposits cost 0.7%, with a £3 minimum, which makes frequent small deposits relatively expensive.

Pros

  • Everyday UK payments without a monthly subscription.
  • Cash and cheque deposit options, with phone and chat support.

Cons

  • Cash deposits carry a percentage fee and minimum charge.
  • International payments and additional currency services have separate costs.

I’d compare Monzo Business Pro if invoicing and automatically setting aside tax are your priority. It currently costs £9 monthly, so weigh the admin time saved against the subscription.

An app-based account for children

GoHenry

Best for teaching children about money

GoHenry combines a spending card with money lessons and parental controls.

I’d pay for it if you plan to use the teaching features, rather than simply wanting somewhere to send pocket money.

Children aged 6 to 18 can practise spending and saving, while parents manage allowances and set paid tasks.

Money Missions use videos and quizzes to explain concepts alongside that real spending experience.

The price depends on how much of that learning you want:

  • Everyday costs £3.99 monthly per child and includes introductory lessons.

  • Plus costs £5.99 and unlocks the full library of more than 100 Money Missions.

  • Max costs £9.99 monthly for up to four children.

Pros

  • Money lessons alongside a card children can use.
  • Parental controls and pocket-money tools.

Cons

  • The full lesson library requires Plus or Max. Everyday also allows only one free top-up a month, then charges 50p each.
  • The spending account uses safeguarded e-money, rather than FSCS-protected bank deposits.

If you only need a child's card and spending controls, compare a free option such as Starling Under 16s.

The subscription is easiest to justify when your child uses the lessons.

Are online and app-based banks good for international transfers?

Generally yes, but a good banking app doesn't guarantee the best transfer price.

Free overseas card spending also says little about the cost of sending money to a foreign bank account.

Compare the exchange rate and any separate fees for the same amount and destination.

A bank can advertise a low transfer fee while including a charge in its exchange rate.

For example, here’s how digital banks compare to Wise and TapTap Send (another top money transfer app) for different currencies and amounts:

How to choose an online bank

Start with your normal day-to-day week.

In my opinion, you should prioritise getting paid and managing bills over extras you'll rarely use.

  • For your main account: check direct debits, cash deposits and how you would get help if the app stopped working.

  • For budgeting: decide whether free Pots or Spaces are enough before paying for virtual cards or extra reporting.

  • For travel: compare card conversion charges and cash allowances separately from international transfer fees.

  • For shared bills: check joint-account eligibility and whether both people need an individual account first.

You can keep your existing bank and try an app-based account for everyday spending.

That lets you decide whether it suits you before moving your salary and bills.

Online banks vs traditional banks

Most high-street banks also offer apps.

The difference is often branch access and the specific account features, rather than whether you can bank on your phone.

Here's what to compare:

Feature

Online and app-based banks

Traditional banks

In-person help

Usually no branches

Available where branches remain open

Cash deposits

Partner locations, or not supported

Branch or Post Office options, depending on the bank

Budgeting

Check free features and paid upgrades

Check what the individual app includes

International payments

Prices and supported destinations vary

Prices vary between standard and specialist products

Keep the branch access if you regularly handle cash or want face-to-face help.

If you mainly use cards and bank transfers, compare the app-only banks and fees for your actual usage.

As for international transfers abroad, like making regular transfers home, or sending a one-off medium sized transfer, a digital only bank is usually much cheaper than a traditional high street banks.

Here’s how these compare when you send money from the UK to different countries and different amounts:

For cheap transfers abroad, I've recently wrote a guide on the cheapest ways to send money abroad from the UK.

What does an online bank account cost?

A free account can still charge for transactions and have other costs:

  • Monthly subscriptions, including cancellation terms.

  • Cash deposits and withdrawals above the allowance.

  • Currency conversion and international transfers.

  • Card delivery and replacements.

  • Overdraft interest, where borrowing is available.

Monese's free plan, for example, charges for incoming bank transfers. Revolut Standard adds exchange fees in certain circumstances.

These costs matter more than the word “free” beside the account name.

For paid plans, compare the annual subscription with benefits you would otherwise buy.

For cashback accounts, check the qualifying activity and any required savings balance as well as the headline percentage.

How to open an app-only bank account

You can usually apply from your phone, but a quick application doesn't guarantee instant approval.

Check eligibility

Confirm age and residency requirements for the account you want.

Download the official app

Follow the link from the company's website.

Enter your details

This normally includes your address and information about how you'll use the account.

Verify your identity

Expect a photo ID and a selfie or video.

Some applications also need address documents.

Wait for approval

Then follow the instructions to fund the account and activate your card.

Accepted documents vary, so check the bank's list first. Monese's approach may help if address paperwork is the problem, but it still checks your identity.

Is your money protected?

Protection depends on the company and product holding your money, not whether it has branches.

Eligible bank deposits have FSCS protection up to £120,000 per person, per banking licence.

Money across brands sharing a licence counts towards the same limit.

E-money accounts use safeguarding instead.

Funds are typically separated from the company's own money or covered by an insurance arrangement.

If the company fails, returning money can take time and insolvency costs may reduce the amount returned.

Revolut's UK bank launched in March 2026.

Eligible balances moved to Revolut Bank UK Ltd receive FSCS protection. Balances still held as e-money with Revolut Ltd remain safeguarded.

Check the legal company in your account terms against the Financial Services Register.

Savings and investments inside the same app can have different arrangements.

We've explained this in more detail in our guide to money transfer regulations in the UK.

If sending money abroad is part of your decision, compare a quote for your own amount and destination using the form below.

Our methodology and why you can trust us

We compared these accounts around how you'd use them, from managing household bills to getting paid from abroad.

Our picks reflect where each account is most useful, with fees and limitations considered alongside the features.

We check account details against the latest UK terms and look at discussions online for practical questions worth answering.

That includes whether paid budgeting tools justify a subscription and when a second account could be useful.

For international transfers and exchange rates, we use real-time exchange rates and fees, and calculate the markup and how much you will get in the end.

Where live rates are not available, we collect them manually and run through the same comparison.

We may receive commission when you click through to the company from this page, however, our commercial relationships do not influence the positioning or what we say about these companies.

You can read more about how we review money transfer companies.
