For an urgent payment abroad, I suggest starting with the money already in your M-Pesa wallet or Kenyan bank account.

M-PESA Global offers overseas wallet and cash routes, while Grey and Eversend provide additional KES-funded bank and wallet options.

Grey's UK and Nigerian bank payments typically arrive within minutes, while Western Union through Equity offers eligible overseas cash collection in minutes.

Choose the recipient's receiving method first, then include funding, conversion and any account checks in the transfer time.

M-PESA Global

Send abroad from your existing M-Pesa wallet

If your M-Pesa account is active and registered, M-PESA Global lets you send abroad through wallet, bank and cash routes.

I think this is a good place to start when your balance is already in M-Pesa and the recipient's country and receiving method are available.

You need to opt into Global before sending, through the app service or *334#.

The current Safaricom app is My OneApp, with M-PESA Global retained as the international sending service.

You can send to mobile recipients in Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, Malawi, Bangladesh and Pakistan, with the receiving option determined by the route.

Its Western Union connection adds overseas cash collection, while bank delivery should be assessed separately from the mobile-wallet option.

Use the current transfer quote for the fee, exchange rate and destination limit, rather than applying domestic M-Pesa limits to every international payment.

GlobalPay's virtual Visa is for merchant spending, and does not establish a person-to-person remittance route.

Grey

Make fast UK and Nigerian bank deposits

Grey accepts KES funding through M-Pesa or a Kenyan bank, with UK GBP payouts using Faster Payments and Nigerian NGN payouts using NIBSS.

Both typically arrive within minutes once the sending balance is funded, which gives these bank destinations a clear fast-payment use case.

My suggestion is to compare Grey for those deposits, or a Ghana bank or MTN MoMo payment.

US bank payments use ACH and take one to two business days, so that route serves a different deadline.

For USD, GBP and EUR conversion, the fee is 1% capped at US$6, with any destination withdrawal charge included in the quote.

Grey is a financial technology service using licensed banking partners, with its contract naming Grey Inc. rather than a Kenyan deposit-taking bank.

Eversend

Fund African wallet payments through M-Pesa

Eversend supports Kenyan KES funding from M-Pesa, then sending to African bank accounts, mobile wallets or another Eversend account.

In my opinion, it suits a regional wallet recipient, particularly when your sending balance is already available.

African mobile-money and bank payouts typically take minutes, while external USD, GBP and EUR bank payments can take the same day to two business days.

Its mobile-money funding process uses a registered, verified number, followed by the payment approval on your phone.

Internal Eversend transfers are instant, which is useful when you both already have accounts and can use the arriving balance.

Eversend operates through regulated entities, with its current service information identifying authorisation for inbound and outbound Kenyan remittances.

Prime Remit

Send bank and wallet payments from your Prime account

If you hold an individual Prime Bank account, you can register for Prime Remit in PrimeMobi and use its near-real-time receiving routes.

I suggest comparing it when the money is already in your bank account and the recipient has an available bank or wallet.

The service operates around the clock, with a US$5,000-equivalent transaction and daily limit.

Prime Remit offers overseas bank deposits and mobile wallets, including Uganda’s MTN and Airtel, participating Tanzanian wallets and Malaysia’s Touch ’n Go wallet.

For Uganda bank or wallet delivery, the listed charge is US$1.10 plus 0.5% of the sending amount, with the quoted exchange rate also relevant.

The bank can request supporting documents, and the recipient's institution may impose its own charge.

Choose the actual payout shown in PrimeMobi rather than assuming every international bank is connected.

Western Union through Equity

Make overseas cash available from your bank balance

Equity offers Western Union sending through Equity Mobile and Equity Online, with overseas transfers payable at participating agent locations.

I suggest using this route when your money is already in an Equity account and the recipient needs accessible cash collection.

Eligible payments can be available within minutes, while the recipient still needs the correct collection details and identification.

The destination determines the sending charge, with exchange pricing included when currencies differ.

Check that the receiving agent is open and accessible, since collection can take longer than making the transfer available.

If you bank with KCB, its app also provides Western Union sending without needing an Equity account.

Its fee promotion ended on 30 September 2026, so compare current charges rather than assuming the transfer is free.

How to fund your transfer quickly

An available wallet or bank balance removes the wait for a new deposit, which is useful when the payment needs to leave immediately.

If you are funding a separate transfer service through M-Pesa, approve the correct payment request and wait for its sending balance to be credited.

Your situation

How to fund it

Why it can save time

Your money is already in M-Pesa

Use an available Global route directly

Avoids moving funds into a separate sending account

You need a foreign bank or wallet payment

Fund Grey or Eversend through the available M-Pesa instructions

Lets you use the wallet balance you already hold

Your money is in a Kenyan bank

Use Prime Remit or your bank's Western Union service

Avoids an extra withdrawal and redeposit

You have physical cash

Use a verified sending branch or agent, including Mukuru's Kenyan branch-funded service

Keeps cash funding separate from recipient collection

Mukuru also accepts M-Pesa payment for a created Kenyan sending order, with bank, wallet and cash payout depending on destination.

For a bank-funded transfer, check when the sending account actually receives the deposit before counting the overseas delivery time.

Choose how the recipient receives the money

Bank accounts

Local receiving networks can make bank delivery faster than a payment requiring several correspondent banks.

For sending money from Kenya to the United Kingdom, bank delivery lets the recipient use an existing account.

Prime Remit supplies another bank-funded option for its connected destinations, with the actual corridor determining recipient delivery time.

Mobile wallets

A mobile wallet can give the recipient a usable balance without visiting a cash agent or opening a conventional bank account.

Confirm the country, network and registered recipient number, since a domestic M-Pesa account does not establish that every overseas wallet is reachable.

For sending money from Kenya to Uganda, you can pay MTN, Airtel and FlexiPay wallets or a bank account through Prime Remit.

For sending money from Kenya to Ghana, Grey supports MTN MoMo, with typical delivery within minutes for its Ghana payout options.

M-PESA Global and Eversend offer additional regional mobile routes, with availability and recipient limits checked for the chosen service.

Cash collection

Cash collection suits someone who needs physical money, with agent access and opening hours affecting when they can actually collect.

Western Union through a Kenyan bank or M-PESA Global provides a route to participating overseas agents.

Match the recipient's name to their identification and share the tracking details required for collection.

Payments within the same service

An internal wallet payment is useful when you both already use the service and the recipient can spend the arriving balance.

If they need to move it into a bank or withdraw cash, include that additional step before choosing an internal payment.

Avoid delays before an urgent first payment

Activate the sending service in advance

Complete the required identity checks or M-PESA Global opt-in before the urgent payment, and have the required bank access ready.

Check the exact receiving account

Confirm the wallet network and registered number, bank details or cash-collection name before committing the payment.

Approve and confirm funding

Follow the correct M-Pesa prompt or bank instructions, then check that the sending service has received the money.

Sending money within Kenya

For a domestic mobile payment, use the local wallet service rather than creating an overseas transfer.

PesaLink supports instant account-to-account payments around the clock through participating institutions, accessible through online banking, a bank app or USSD.

The network supports transfers up to KSh999,999, with your bank's channel limit and charge still applying.

Use the bank's PesaLink option and confirm the receiving name before sending a larger local payment.

Compare the cost of meeting your deadline

Compare the amount the recipient can use for the same KES budget, receiving method and deadline.

M-PESA Global

Current destination fee and exchange rate

Grey

Conversion and applicable destination withdrawal fees

Eversend

Prime Remit

Western Union through your bank

A wallet cash-out charge can change the cheapest usable payment, particularly when the recipient ultimately needs cash.

For a more flexible deadline, compare the cheapest ways to send money abroad from Kenya alongside these faster methods.

Compare the transfer cost for your destination, then confirm when the recipient can use the money through the selected route.

Our methodology & why trust us

We assessed regulated banks and transfer services with documented Kenyan-origin personal sending, using current official funding, eligibility and receiving information.

The selection includes local bank and M-Pesa routes, with newly documented Grey and Eversend sending checked separately from Kenya receiving pages.

Published transfer times describe the supported service and receiving method, with no claim that we personally timed the payments or identified one universally fastest provider.
