The commission may also impact the ordering of the providers shown. Table of Contents
For a large international transfer, I would start with Regency FX because an individually quoted rate can have more impact than a low headline fee.
For smaller regional wallet transfers, M-PESA Global is the more practical starting point, although the recipient’s cash-out cost still affects the final value.
Mukuru covers branch or M-Pesa funding, while Co-opRemit suits existing Co-operative Bank customers who prefer help arranging the transfer in person.

Table updates weekly. All information comes directly from our comparisons, provider APIs, and manual rate collection.
Since KES rates change all the time, this table shows the cheapest options right now to send from Kenya, while the list below covers companies that are generally competitive for different types of transfer.

M-PESA Global
M-PESA Global keeps small transfers simple when the recipient has a supported mobile wallet.
Active registered M-PESA users can opt in through the app or *334#, then select a supported country and recipient.
Named mobile destinations include Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Botswana, Burundi, Zambia, Malawi, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The M-PESA app's Global Cost Estimator shows the exchange rate and fee after you select the route.
If the money is already in M-PESA, you can send from that balance without first moving it into a bank account.
Ask the recipient whether wallet withdrawal creates another cost, because a lower transfer fee can lose value at cash-out.
Regency FX
I'd choose Regency FX for large transfers from Kenya.
You receive an individually quoted exchange rate and an account manager, which is useful when timing or payment instructions could change the result.
The downside is that you need to request a quote before you can judge the complete cost against an online service.
Regency FX arranges payments through regulated execution partners, so I would check which entity handles your transfer and how your money is protected.
I would compare the final recipient amount rather than the quoted rate alone, including every transfer and correspondent charge attached to the payment.
Mukuru
Mukuru offers several ways to fund and deliver a personal transfer.
You can register in Kenya and fund the transfer through M-Pesa or at a Mukuru branch.
The recipient can collect cash or receive money into a bank account or mobile wallet, depending on the selected destination.
Core customers can send up to USD7,500 monthly and USD90,000 yearly, while Mukuru Max raises those limits with evidence of income.
Those limits are shown in US dollars, so check the KES equivalent and remaining allowance before placing a larger order.
Mukuru includes its charges in the quote, which means the recipient amount is the useful figure to compare with another service at the same time.
Co-opRemit
Co-opRemit lets Co-operative Bank customers transfer in branch to foreign bank accounts or mobile numbers.
Its transfer fee ranges from USD2.50 to USD12.50 depending on the amount, with separate treatment for Tanzania and Zambia.
The KES1 million daily maximum gives you room beyond routine family payments, subject to destination availability and the bank’s checks.
Kenyan excise can add 15% to the transfer fee where applicable, while the exchange rate and recipient deduction remain separate.
The fee band alone cannot identify the cheapest tier, so ask the branch for the complete KES debit and recipient amount.
Branch initiation also adds time and travel, which can outweigh a modest saving on a small routine payment.
Equity Borderless Banking
Equity Borderless Banking connects Equity accounts across East Africa.
Eligible Equity Kenya customers can send through branch, mobile or online directly to those regional Equity accounts.
An intra-group route can reduce correspondent-bank steps, although Equity's live fee and exchange rate still determine whether it costs less.
For a beneficiary outside that Equity footprint, request the separate SWIFT quote rather than assuming Borderless Banking can reach the account.
SWIFT can suit a formal global bank payment, but the fee, excise and correspondent instruction can change the recipient amount.
I would keep the regional and global quotes separate because they use different settlement paths and cost allocations.
MoneyGram
MoneyGram accepts cash in person for international transfers.
You can arrange an outbound transfer at a participating Kenyan agent, including KCB and Co-operative Bank branches.
Most MoneyGram agents accept cash, but confirm the payment method with your chosen location before travelling there.
Bring valid identification and the recipient’s details, with additional documents depending on the transfer and the agent’s checks.
Cash funding can suit you when your money is already in notes, although travelling to the branch adds time and expense.
If your money is already in an Equity account, Western Union through its app can avoid the withdrawal and branch visit.
Compare the full KES payment and recipient amount before handing over cash, because the transfer fee alone leaves out the exchange-rate cost.
The recipient can collect cash, with bank-account and mobile-wallet delivery also available for selected destinations through Co-operative Bank.
Paying cash therefore does not mean the recipient must collect cash, which is useful when they prefer money delivered to an account.
Western Union through Equity
Western Union through Equity combines digital sending with cash collection.
Eligible Equity Mobile and Online users can send for cash collection abroad where the destination and payout location are supported.
The same service can offer bank or regional Equity delivery, but each recipient method needs its own fee and exchange-rate quote.
Cash collection can be more expensive than account delivery, although it remains useful when the recipient lacks a suitable bank or wallet.
Agent hours, identification and travel can add recipient costs that do not appear inside the sender's KES quote.
I would compare cash routes using the same pickup location, because a cheaper bank transfer cannot solve a cash-access problem.
Standard Chartered is a useful bank benchmark
I would treat Standard Chartered as a benchmark for existing customers rather than one of the main cheapest picks.
Its KES1,400 outgoing telegraphic-transfer fee becomes KES1,610 after 15% excise, before the exchange rate and possible correspondent charges.
That fixed cost equals 16.1% of KES10,000 but 1.61% of KES100,000, so it is particularly difficult to justify on a small payment.
The bank can still be competitive on a specific larger transfer, but only when its exchange rate and charge instruction produce a stronger recipient amount.
How fixed fees change the cheapest option
Fixed fees take a larger share of small transfers, while exchange-rate differences usually carry more weight as the amount rises.
For example, a hypothetical 1% exchange-rate cost on KES100,000 is KES1,000, before the transfer fee or applicable tax.
A KES500 fee saving would not offset that difference if the competing service delivered the same currency without that extra exchange cost.
Calculate excise on the transfer fee only when it is not already included, rather than applying 15% to the remittance principal.
OUR means you pay the relevant sending and correspondent charges, helping when the recipient needs a fixed invoice amount.
SHA splits charges between sender and recipient, while BEN allows relevant charges to come from the recipient's proceeds.
A lower upfront BEN payment can therefore deliver less than a higher OUR quote, even when both use the same exchange rate.
How to save on an international transfer abroad from Kenya
Choose the recipient outcome
Confirm whether the recipient needs an Equity account, another bank, mobile wallet, Visa card or cash collection.
Match the funding route
Compare available M-PESA, bank-account and branch-funded options using the same destination and payout method, including any cost of moving money into the sending account.
Ask for the complete cost
Check the KES debit, transfer fee, excise basis, exchange rate and any correspondent or recipient deduction.
Include recipient access costs
Add wallet cash-out, agent travel or receiving-bank charges when they affect the value available to the recipient.
Pay and keep the reference
Follow the official instructions, then retain the receipt and tracking details until the recipient confirms the full amount.
Use a current quote for the exact destination and payout method, then compare another eligible local route before paying.

Our methodology & why trust us
The shortlist covers regulated transfer services, a currency broker, local wallet options and banks with distinct international payment uses.
Our research checks transfer fees, exchange rates, excise treatment, charge allocation and possible recipient or correspondent costs.
Live values update weekly, while the final quote depends on the destination, amount, funding method, recipient outcome and customer checks.
We may earn commission from some companies, but commercial agreements do not influence their position or what I write about them.
Some services on the list are based on our research rather than internal testing.
