Easiest Way To Receive Money From Abroad in India

Why trust usDisclosure
Table of Contents

The purpose of an overseas payment changes your receiving options in India, particularly when choosing between personal support and money earned from clients.

For family support, I suggest starting with a quoted INR bank deposit, because you can see the expected rupee amount before the sender pays.

You normally provide your existing account details without registering with the sender’s transfer company, while eligible cash collection offers an alternative.

For a work receipt, choose a service that accepts commercial payments and supplies the records needed to explain the money.

  • Family support: receive INR into your existing bank account through a supported overseas sending service.

  • Cash: collect an eligible personal remittance with ID and the transfer reference.

  • Foreign currency: use an eligible foreign-currency bank account with permitted incoming credits.

  • Client payments: arrange an approved export or business receipt and confirm remittance documents.

  • Details: match your account name and supply the correct IFSC or SWIFT instructions.

Receive rupees into your existing bank account

An overseas sender can use Wise, Remitly, Western Union or another supported service to convert their currency and deliver INR into your bank.

You do not need a Wise or Remitly account for an ordinary transfer paid to your existing Indian account.

For example, receiving money from the US in India can involve the sender paying dollars while you receive rupees at your own bank.

The sender registers and funds the transfer, while you provide the beneficiary information requested during their payment setup.

For a bank deposit, have the following details ready to share:

  • Your full account-holder name.

  • Your Indian bank account number and IFSC.

  • Your address and mobile number when requested.

  • The correct reason for the payment, such as family maintenance.

Copy the IFSC from your bank’s own records, particularly if your branch has changed or your account has migrated between banks.

Western Union also supports collection through participating banks’ online or mobile banking, where you enter the transfer details to receive the payment.

That is a partner-bank collection route, so it does not mean every Indian banking app can claim any overseas transfer.

I like direct bank deposit for regular household support because you can use the money without making a separate collection trip.

Ask the sender to quote the required INR amount if you need a fixed sum for rent, education or another payment.

Receive a payment sent by an overseas bank

A SWIFT transfer can suit a pension, payment from an organisation, or a sender who must use their own bank.

Get your Indian bank’s incoming-remittance instructions for the payment currency, rather than assuming your domestic account number and IFSC are sufficient.

Those instructions can include the bank’s SWIFT/BIC, beneficiary name and account number, plus a correspondent bank for the chosen currency.

Your bank may also ask you to confirm a purpose code and provide documents before converting or releasing the money.

For a family payment, keep the sender’s receipt and evidence explaining your relationship and why they sent the money.

For work receipts, provide the invoice or contract and use a payment purpose that reflects the service you supplied.

A rupee savings account generally gives you spendable INR after conversion, so sending USD to it does not create a dollar balance.

My suggestion is to ask the bank about the exchange rate and incoming charges before a large wire, especially if another company could deliver the required INR amount.

Collect an eligible personal remittance in cash

Western Union cash collection lets you receive an eligible overseas personal transfer through an authorised agent without receiving it into a bank account.

Take government-issued photo ID and the Money Transfer Control Number, with your name matching the sender’s transfer record.

You may also need the sender’s name, sending country and expected amount, so get those details before visiting the agent.

Check that the transfer is ready and that the location can pay your amount before making the journey.

India’s Money Transfer Service Scheme covers personal inward remittances such as family maintenance, with separate restrictions from ordinary bank and export receipts.

Under MTSS, each remittance is capped at US$2,500, and one beneficiary can receive up to 30 remittances in a calendar year.

Cash payment is generally limited to ₹50,000 under that scheme, with higher amounts paid through an account or permitted banking instrument.

These are MTSS conditions, so they should not be used as a universal limit on all money entering India.

I suggest using cash when you need to collect without bank access, while checking bank delivery for recurring payments or larger sums.

Keep eligible receipts in foreign currency

India’s foreign-currency accounts have specific eligibility and permitted-credit rules, so an ordinary inward transfer does not automatically qualify for currency retention.

An Exchange Earners’ Foreign Currency account can accept eligible export and professional earnings, while RFC and RFC(D) accounts serve different permitted sources.

Ask your authorised dealer bank which account fits your residency, source of money and intended use before sending foreign-currency instructions.

EEFC accounts have rules governing conversion of balances, so opening one does not mean you can keep every receipt indefinitely.

Our guide to multi-currency accounts in India covers the account choice in more detail, including which currencies and receiving arrangements each option supports.

A service appearing in a transfer comparison does not establish that you can open its foreign-currency holding account as an Indian resident.

Receive payments from overseas clients

If the money pays for your work, choose a bank or collection service that accepts that commercial purpose and supports your business status.

Personal family-remittance routes are unsuitable for relabelling an invoice payment, even when the amount is small or the client is a friend.

Before you send the first invoice, confirm the following payment details:

  • Accepted payer country, currency and payment method.

  • Settlement currency and destination bank account.

  • Invoice, identity and business documents needed.

  • Availability of an e-FIRC or other required inward-remittance evidence.

Wise Business receiving details can generate an e-FIRC for eligible business receipts, while other INR transfers through Wise follow a different document request process.

For an ordinary Wise transfer, the sender can retrieve the No Objection Certificate identifying the Indian partner bank that processed the payment.

That distinction is why I suggest settling the paperwork before asking a client to pay, rather than assuming any rupee credit produces identical documents.

See international business payments in India for collection-account and invoice options, because the personal comparisons below do not establish business eligibility.

Receive through your UPI ID

Remitly supports UPI delivery from the US to India, so your sender can choose UPI when setting up that personal transfer.

Share your UPI ID and the matching beneficiary name, with the incoming rupees reaching the bank account linked to that ID.

You can use an eligible UPI app such as Google Pay to manage that linked account, without opening a Remitly account yourself.

I like this option when you already use UPI and would rather share a payment ID than your full bank instructions.

The overseas sending service still handles the international transfer and conversion, so check that its checkout offers UPI for the sender’s country.

What does it cost to receive money from abroad?

The exchange rate can change your rupee receipt more than a visible transfer fee, particularly when the sender compares a bank wire with local INR delivery.

Ask for the final INR amount alongside the sender’s total payment, then check whether your bank can deduct anything afterwards.

These fixed sending amounts are roughly worth ₹55,000 before fees, using rounded examples from five overseas markets.

They are approximate equivalents, so compare companies within each sending route rather than treating every foreign-currency amount as an identical offer.

Match the payout method in the sender’s quote to the account or collection option you need, because available methods differ between companies.

For SWIFT, OUR, SHA and BEN instructions allocate bank charges differently, and intermediary deductions can still need clarification with the sending bank.

How long does it take to receive the money?

A transfer company’s INR deposit can arrive quickly, while sender funding, verification and receiving-bank processing can extend the delivery time.

Cash can be available within minutes on an eligible funded transfer, although you still need an open agent and accepted identification.

International bank payments commonly take several business days, especially when a correspondent bank or a purpose-document check is involved.

Use the estimate for the selected funding and payout methods, then allow time to answer any bank request before a payment deadline.

Limits, reporting and documents

Your sender’s service and your receiving account can set their own caps, separately from the MTSS limits described above.

A bank request for source-of-funds evidence does not by itself mean the transfer is prohibited or that tax is due.

Keep statements for your own savings, gift or family-support records, and invoices or contracts for work receipts.

Ask your bank which purpose code and inward-remittance evidence apply to your payment, particularly when it relates to an export or a substantial one-off receipt.

Do you pay tax on money received from abroad?

The reason for the receipt and your tax status determine the treatment, rather than the money arriving from a foreign bank.

Moving your own existing savings does not itself create a new gift, although the original income and any investment gains can have separate tax consequences.

Gifts from specified relatives and certain other exempt categories receive different treatment from gifts by friends or unrelated people.

An overseas payer does not make salary or freelance earnings tax-free, so keep work receipts separate from personal support in your records.

For a large gift, inheritance or ongoing overseas income, check the Income Tax Department’s current category rules before relying on a transfer amount alone.

How to receive money from abroad in India

Identify the payment purpose

Decide whether this is family support, your own funds or a work receipt, then choose a service that accepts that purpose.

Agree the receiving method

Choose INR bank deposit, eligible cash collection or an appropriate foreign-currency account, and confirm the expected amount you can use.

Send the correct details

Share your matching account name and IFSC or bank-issued SWIFT instructions, while keeping your banking password and one-time codes private.

Complete any release checks

Respond to purpose and source-document requests through your bank, then retain the transfer receipt and any required remittance certificate.

What if the money has not arrived?

Start with the sender’s receipt, delivery estimate and reference, then check the beneficiary name, account number and IFSC against your bank records.

If the service is still waiting for payment or verification, the sender needs to resolve that with the sending company.

If the transfer is marked delivered, ask your bank whether a matching inward payment is awaiting purpose information or supporting documents.

For a missing SWIFT payment, the sender can request a bank trace and payment confirmation, including the tracking reference or MT103 where available.

For cash, check readiness with the sending service before travelling, and ask the sender to correct any name mismatch.

If you receive less than expected

Compare the quoted INR amount with your bank credit, then ask whether conversion, correspondent charges or receiving-bank fees explain the shortfall.

Keep the receipt and ask for a fee breakdown before the sender pays to make up the difference.

Compare a personal transfer with your sender before the next payment, using the method that delivers money where you need it.

Compare transfers to India

Enter the sender’s country and amount, then choose India as the destination to compare available transfer rates and fees.
