An overseas payment for UAE rent can reach your existing bank account as dirhams, with the sender arranging conversion before paying.
My suggestion is to agree the AED amount you need first, then compare the cost of delivering it into that account.
You can also collect cash through a supported exchange-house network, or use a suitable foreign-currency account when you want to retain dollars or another currency.

Receive AED into your existing bank account
An overseas sender can use a transfer company to convert their money and deposit dirhams into your UAE account.
You do not need your own account with that company when the sender chooses delivery to your bank.
Wise supports AED deposits into UAE bank accounts, requiring your full name and a 23-character IBAN beginning with AE.
Remitly and other services also appear in our inward comparisons, with the available choice depending on where your sender lives.
For a family payment from Britain, for example, the sender funds the transfer in pounds while you receive AED.
I like this arrangement for recurring living costs because you can agree on the amount needed in dirhams before payment.
Give the sender your name exactly as recorded by your bank, and copy your IBAN from the banking app.
An account number and an IBAN are different fields, so use whichever the chosen service requests rather than shortening the IBAN yourself.
The sender should select UAE bank deposit and check the receiving currency before confirming their payment.
Our guide to sending money from the UK to the UAE covers the sender’s choice for that particular route.
Receive a wire from an overseas bank
A bank wire can suit an overseas pension administrator or employer that pays through its own bank rather than a remittance app.
Obtain the incoming-payment instructions from your UAE bank, especially when the payment will arrive in a foreign currency.
For Emirates NBD, the sender needs your recorded name, account number, IBAN, bank address and SWIFT code EBILAEAD.
Use those instructions only for an Emirates NBD account, because another UAE bank will have its own bank code.
Confirm whether your account accepts the incoming currency unchanged or converts it into AED before crediting you.
You can also be asked for your address or payment purpose, depending on the sending bank and transaction.
Salary and client payments need the right account
If an overseas employer is paying you, ask your bank which details and employment records it needs for that payment.
Keep the employment agreement and payslip so you can explain the payer and amount if the bank queries them.
Freelance invoices and business collections can require a different account arrangement, even when the money comes from the same country.
A foreign-currency account lets you retain a supported currency instead of converting the whole payment into dirhams on arrival.
For example, Emirates NBD offers foreign-currency accounts, and you can open an additional account through its app if you already bank there.
If you are new to the bank, you first need to open an eligible current or savings account.
Share the receiving instructions for the matching currency account, including any correspondent-bank details your bank supplies for that currency.
I'd say keep dollars this way when you have future dollar expenses, because converting them twice introduces avoidable exchange costs.
There can still be account-package requirements and withdrawal charges, while holding currency leaves you exposed to exchange-rate changes.
Emirates NBD foreign-currency accounts do not come with a separate debit card or cheque book, which changes how you access the balance.
A Wise transfer does not require a UAE Wise balance
An eligible overseas Wise sender can pay AED into your UAE bank account without you opening a Wise account.
If you live in the UAE, you cannot currently open a new Wise holding account with foreign-currency receiving balances.
Older accounts can have different features, so check the options shown for your current registered residence before planning to receive foreign currency.
For the account-selection decision, our multi-currency accounts in the UAE guide explains the difference between bank accounts and overseas receiving details.
Collect the money in cash
Western Union offers cash collection at participating UAE agents, giving you a receiving option when you cannot use a bank account.
The sender chooses cash collection and gives your name as it appears on the identification you will present.
Bring your Emirates ID or an accepted passport, together with the Money Transfer Control Number and the sender’s details.
Al Ansari Exchange also handles international remittances through its networks, with identification and service conditions applying at the branch.
Confirm the chosen service and agent before travelling, because a nearby exchange house may not handle that particular transfer.
I'd say check the collection currency and amount with the sender, especially if you intend to deposit the cash into a bank afterwards.
Keep the transfer reference private and check that the payment is available before visiting the collection location.
Receive through PayPal
PayPal can receive an overseas payment into your PayPal account using your registered email address or a supported payment link.
Both sides need PayPal accounts, making this different from a transfer company paying directly into your existing bank account.
I like it when the payer already requires PayPal, after checking how much you can withdraw into your UAE account.
Currency conversion and withdrawal charges can reduce the usable amount, while commercial payments have their own fees and conditions.
Domestic Aani or phone-linked payments should not be assumed to accept any overseas transfer simply because they work between UAE accounts.
What does it cost to receive money in the UAE?
The sender’s transfer fee is only one part of the price, because conversion and bank deductions can change what reaches you.

Charge to make the money usable
Receiving foreign currency into an AED account allows the bank to convert it at its own exchange rate.
I suggest comparing that outcome with an overseas service delivering AED, particularly for a repeated family payment or monthly living costs.
Our inward comparisons use sending amounts around AED5,000 before fees, with the original transfer amount visible for each country.

For a wire, ask the sender about OUR, SHA or BEN charges before assuming the instructed amount will arrive unchanged.
OUR allocates transfer charges to the sender, SHA shares them, and BEN allows charges to come out of the beneficiary’s payment.
If you need an exact AED amount for a bill, have the sender confirm how their bank handles all downstream charges.
How long will the payment take?
Wise AED bank deposits usually arrive within zero to two working days after Wise receives and converts the sender’s money.
Conversion can take up to another two working days, so the sender’s full estimate is more useful than the payout stage alone.
Bank wires depend on cut-off times and intermediary banks, while cash collection also depends on the chosen agent being open.
Use the delivery estimate for the selected route, and allow time for identity or payment-purpose checks before a deadline.
Limits, documents and tax on overseas receipts
Your receiving account and the sender’s service can impose limits, so confirm both when arranging an unusually large payment.
Keep bank statements for savings, a gift letter for family support, or sale documents when the money comes from selling an asset.
UAE exchange-house rules require source and purpose information for qualifying inward transfers of AED55,000 or more, including specified aggregation over 45 days.
That is a documentation requirement for exchange houses, and it should not be read as a universal bank receiving limit.
The tax position depends on what the payment represents, rather than simply arriving from an overseas account.
Wages and qualifying personal investment income are excluded from business activities for UAE natural-person corporate tax purposes.
If you conduct a UAE business activity, the natural-person rules can apply when annual business turnover exceeds AED1 million.
That turnover test is separate from a transfer’s size, and overseas client receipts need to be assessed as business income where applicable.
How to receive money from abroad in the UAE
Choose AED, foreign currency or cash
Decide how you will use the money, then select a matching bank account or supported cash-collection service.
Send the correct receiving instructions
Copy your bank’s account details, or give your cash-collection name exactly as it appears on your accepted identification.
Agree on the amount and payment purpose
Ask the sender to check the usable receiving amount and enter a purpose that accurately describes the payment.
Retain the receipt and confirm credit
Keep the sender’s transfer reference, then confirm the money is available in your account or ready for collection.
What if the money has not arrived?
Ask the sender whether their payment was funded and processed, then check the recipient details against your bank records.
For a transfer-company payment, the sender should request a trace using the transaction reference and expected delivery date.
For a bank wire, ask for the SWIFT payment confirmation, including an MT103 or equivalent tracking information supplied by the bank.
Give your receiving bank the payment date, currency, amount and sender’s name so it can investigate the incoming transfer.
Received less than you expected?
Compare the sender’s receipt with your account credit to identify conversion, intermediary deductions or an incoming bank charge.
Ask the bank or sending service to explain the difference before arranging another transfer to cover the shortfall.
Ask the sender to compare the cost of paying into the UAE before choosing how you will receive the money.
Compare transfers to the UAE
Enter the sender’s country and amount, then choose the UAE as the destination to compare available transfer rates and fees.
Our methodology & why trust us
We checked UAE bank instructions, cash-collection requirements and account eligibility separately from the services available to an overseas sender.
Our comparisons use inward personal-transfer routes, while receiving-bank deductions and commercial-payment conditions need separate checks for your account.
Our review methodology explains how we assess transfer services and use comparison data to evaluate their costs and features.
