Your RIB gives an overseas payer the details of your French account, but the account still needs to accept the payment they intend to send.
A euro SEPA transfer, a dollar wire and money collected in cash reach you through different methods, with different charges and information requirements.
My suggestion is to decide where you want the money first, then ask the sender to compare the cost of delivering it there.

Euros into your account: share the name and IBAN shown on your current RIB.
Sender holds another currency: compare conversion before choosing their bank or a transfer company.
Payment account such as Nickel: check accepted transfer types before supplying its RIB.
Want to retain dollars or pounds: use an account supporting that currency and receiving route.
Family gift: a declaration can be required even when no gift tax is payable.
Ways to receive money from abroad in France
The main choice is whether the money reaches a euro account, stays in foreign currency or becomes cash you collect at an agent.
Your existing bank account may already do everything you need, while a different receiving method can help when its currency or access is unsuitable.

Receive euros using your RIB
A RIB, short for relevé d’identité bancaire, is the document containing your account-holder name, bank details, IBAN and BIC.
Download it from your banking app or online account and share it with the payer through a channel you both recognise.
For a standard SEPA transfer, your name and IBAN identify the destination, although a payer’s administration may ask for the complete RIB document.
A French IBAN has 27 characters and starts with FR, but copy the complete number rather than reconstructing it from domestic account codes.
SEPA is a euro payment system covering participating countries, so an overseas sender can use it when their account and payment service support it.
A relative sending euros from Germany can therefore pay your French account without you signing up for a separate money-transfer app.
Ask the sender to use your registered account-holder name, especially when their bank checks whether the name and IBAN match.
If they receive a mismatch warning, compare the details together before authorising payment instead of assuming that an old saved beneficiary remains correct.
Sharing receiving details does not require sharing your card PIN, banking password or a code that authorises an outgoing transaction.
Ask the sender to convert and deposit euros
When the money starts in pounds, dollars or francs, the sender can use a transfer company that converts it before paying your account in euros.
You generally supply your receiving details while the sender registers, verifies their identity and pays through the service available in their sending country.
Wise, Remitly and Western Union are examples supporting French account delivery from relevant markets, rather than services every sender can necessarily use.
This can leave you with the same French account and spending access, while changing the exchange rate and fees applied before the money arrives.
For example, someone in Britain can compare the euros delivered for a fixed pound payment instead of sending pounds for your French bank to convert.
Ask for the expected euro receipt, payment method and delivery estimate, because the cheapest advertised fee alone does not establish the cheapest transfer.
For a property purchase or another substantial receipt, an account manager through a service such as Currencies Direct can help coordinate the currency transaction.
Confirm sender eligibility, account ownership requirements and destination details before using a broker for money intended for a notaire or another third party.
Our best money transfer apps guide can help your sender compare services once you have agreed how you want to receive the payment.
Check a payment account’s receiving restrictions
Having a French RIB does not mean that an account accepts every international transfer type, even when another bank accepts the same currency.
Nickel’s current French terms accept incoming euros through SEPA from a SEPA-area country and expressly reject incoming and outgoing SWIFT transfers.
If you use Nickel, tell the sender that you need a supported euro SEPA deposit rather than dollars wired directly from their American bank.
A transfer company may convert the money and make that final deposit, but confirm its payout route and your account’s acceptance before paying.
You can download your Nickel RIB from its app or customer area, then use the account-holder name and IBAN shown there.
Its incoming transfer fee is zero, although maintaining the account and withdrawing cash have separate tariffs that affect your overall cost.
In my opinion, keeping an existing payment account that accepts the receipt makes more sense than opening another solely because the sender lives abroad.
Receive an international wire through your bank
A foreign employer, pension administrator or other institution may prefer a direct bank wire, especially when it sends a currency other than euros.
Ask your French bank for international receiving instructions for that currency, because the RIB alone may not include every routing detail the payer needs.
The instructions commonly include your full name, IBAN, bank name and BIC/SWIFT, with your address or correspondent-bank information when the route requires them.
Establish whether your account will hold the currency or convert it automatically into euros, and ask which receiving charges apply to that payment.
A payer sending dollars to a euro account can expose you to the bank’s conversion rate as well as possible intermediary and receiving fees.
I'd say compare that expected result with euro delivery through another service when you have a choice over how the institution pays you.
For payments with an exact amount due, agree who covers charges rather than discovering a shortfall after the bank has processed the wire.
Keep foreign currency in a suitable account
You may want to receive pounds for future British expenses, or retain dollars instead of converting your entire foreign payment immediately into euros.
A bank foreign-currency account or a service such as Wise or Revolut can provide this, subject to its supported currencies and receiving instructions.
Compare multi-currency accounts in France by receiving route, holding costs, conversion charges and eventual withdrawal costs before deciding that retaining the currency saves you money.
Wise gives eligible French residents receiving details for supported currencies, including local GBP and EUR details and USD details for supported American payments.
Local GBP and EUR receipts and USD ACH receipts are free under its personal pricing, while receiving USD domestic wires or USD SWIFT payments costs US$6.11.
Conversion and onward transfers are separate transactions, so receiving dollars without conversion does not make their eventual arrival in your French bank free.
Revolut’s French account instructions include local GBP details, local EUR details and SWIFT information for supported currencies, which you select within the relevant balance.
New accounts with its French branch receive an FR IBAN, while customers migrating from a Lithuanian account should check their current details before sharing them.
Do not assume that your euro IBAN establishes a local American ACH receiving route, since the available details differ by service and currency.
Before opening an account managed outside France, check the foreign-account declaration requirements as well as the features you intend to use.
Collect the money in cash
Western Union and MoneyGram offer cash collection in France through participating agents, allowing you to receive without first opening a bank account.
Ask the sender to choose cash payout in France and enter your name as it appears on the identification the agent accepts.
Before travelling, check that the transfer is ready, the location handles that service and it can pay the amount you expect to collect.
You will need the transfer reference and accepted identification, with any further information or documents requested for the transaction.
Use the service’s current agent finder rather than assuming that every post office, shop or location showing an old sign still handles collection.
Cash can suit an urgent household payment, although opening hours, travel and later depositing or withdrawing money can make account receipt easier for repeated payments.
Compare the euro cash payout before the sender pays, because it can have different pricing from bank delivery offered by the same company.
Receive through Wero or a shared app
Wero connects eligible participating bank accounts and lets people send money using details such as a registered phone number instead of exchanging a RIB.
It replaced Paylib in France and supports cross-border euro payments with participating services, including banks in Germany and Belgium.
Both people need the service activated with compatible banks, and your receiving phone number is associated with one account for receiving payments.
That makes it useful for a friend paying you from a supported account, rather than a general way to receive dollars from any overseas bank.
Check the current bank and country coverage in the service before relying on it, since expansion does not mean every institution supports every feature.
PayPal and transfers between Revolut users are other options when both people already have suitable accounts, although balances and withdrawal costs differ.
PayPal personal receipts are free when no currency conversion applies, while commercial payments and conversion follow different charges.
Start with what you can use after all charges, including currency conversion, the sender’s fee and any deductions from the receiving account.
Euro SEPA receipt can be free, while receiving the same overseas payment as a foreign-currency wire can introduce a bank charge and conversion costs.
BNP Paribas’ French personal tariff effective January 2026 lists free receipt of standard or instant SEPA transfers and an €11 non-SEPA receiving commission.
On a covered €500 non-SEPA receipt, that commission alone equals 2.2%, before any currency conversion or other charges that apply to the payment.
This is one bank’s tariff rather than a French receiving tax, so check your own account agreement and any individually agreed terms.
For a sender converting foreign currency, the comparison below shows current options for rounded sending amounts broadly equivalent to a €500 receipt.

Each origin uses a fixed amount in its own currency, so compare offers for that origin rather than treating the three sending amounts as identical.
Match the quote to the method you need, then check whether your French account adds a receiving fee outside the amount shown by the sender.
For SWIFT wires, OUR means the sender pays charges, SHA shares them and BEN allocates them to the beneficiary, subject to the payment’s available options.
Ask what the chosen arrangement covers, because paying the sending bank’s commission does not by itself remove a receiving charge at your bank.
For recurring receipts, a small difference in conversion can outweigh an account’s setup convenience, especially when you exchange the full payment every month.
Our international money transfer fees guide explains how the exchange rate and separate fees combine when your sender compares delivery costs.
How long will the money take to arrive?
A compatible SEPA instant payment credits the receiving account within seconds and operates continuously, including weekends, once the sender actually initiates that payment.
A standard electronic SEPA transfer normally has a maximum execution time of one working day after the sending bank receives the instruction.
A currency-transfer company’s total delivery time also includes funding, verification and conversion, so its final euro deposit being fast does not make every transfer immediate.
International SWIFT wires can take several working days, with timing affected by intermediary processing, bank cut-offs, holidays and any checks on the payment.
Cash availability depends on the sender’s funding and checks as well as the agent’s opening hours, even when the quoted transfer processing is quick.
Use the confirmed delivery estimate for your transaction rather than assuming that the speed of a previous payment applies to the next one.
Limits, documents and reporting
Your sender’s payment limit, the transfer service’s allowance and your account’s receiving restrictions are separate questions, so check all three before arranging a substantial payment.
A limit shown for sending transfers from your account does not necessarily limit incoming payments, and a card-spending ceiling does not establish an international receiving ceiling.
For a large property, inheritance or savings transfer, contact the receiving institution beforehand and ask which documents it needs to understand the payment.
Useful evidence may include statements showing the source account, a sale contract, payslips, a pension statement or the relevant inheritance documents.
Banks assess unusual activity against their knowledge of your account, so documentation requests are not confined to one universal amount that guarantees no checks below it.
Answer a request through your bank’s verified channel and keep the transfer receipt together with the evidence explaining where the money originated.
Cash at the border follows separate rules
Physically carrying €10,000 or more across the French border requires a customs declaration, with provenance documents required for €50,000 or more.
These transport rules do not establish a €10,000 limit on a bank transfer arriving in France, which follows the account and payment rules instead.
Do you need to declare the money for tax?
Start with why you receive the money, since foreign earnings, a family gift and moving your own savings are different situations.
Moving existing savings between accounts you own does not turn them into new earnings, although income or gains underlying those savings can have tax consequences.
If you are French tax resident, foreign wages, pensions or other income can require declaration, with treaty rules determining any exemption or relief from double taxation.
The foreign-income annex 2047 and the main income return are relevant for many receipts, although specific exempt salary or pension categories follow different instructions.
Check the guidance for the actual income and country involved rather than assuming that no French return is needed because tax was already deducted abroad.
Gifts and foreign accounts need separate checks
A family payment can be a gift requiring declaration even when an allowance or exemption means that no gift tax is payable.
For gifts falling within French rules, the recipient normally makes the declaration, with the donor’s and recipient’s circumstances affecting the applicable treatment.
From January 2026, covered gift declarations must normally be made online through impots.gouv.fr, although exceptions permit another process.
One relevant exception concerns declarations claiming a credit for gift tax paid abroad, so check the official instructions before choosing the online route.
A customary present proportionate to the occasion and donor’s means can have different treatment from a substantial gift, rather than every birthday payment following one rule.
Holding a foreign account is another issue: French tax residents generally declare relevant accounts opened, held, used or closed abroad alongside their annual income return.
The account declaration uses form 3916/3916-bis, and a limited exemption for certain linked online-payment accounts has cumulative conditions that do not cover every app balance.
Receiving into a French account does not itself mean you opened a foreign account, while retaining money with an overseas institution can create a separate declaration obligation.
For an inheritance or a substantial cross-border gift, establish the jurisdiction and declaration position before relying on a general family allowance.
How to arrange a receipt into France
Agree the receiving method before the sender pays, especially if your account accepts euro SEPA deposits but cannot receive the foreign wire they planned.
Choose where the money should arrive
Decide between euros in your French account, a supported foreign-currency balance or cash collection, checking whether your existing account accepts the proposed route.
Share the current receiving information
Send your current RIB for account receipt, or the currency-specific international instructions, with your name matching the receiving institution’s records.
Confirm the amount you should receive
Have the sender confirm the currency, expected payout and delivery estimate, then ask your own institution about any receiving charge it applies separately.
Keep the evidence and check availability
Save the receipt and source documents, then confirm the credited balance or collection status and handle any income, gift or account declaration that applies.
What if the money has not arrived?
Get the sender’s receipt and check the transfer status, expected delivery date, receiving currency and the destination details used for the payment.
Compare the beneficiary name and IBAN with your current RIB, checking for an older saved account if your bank recently migrated your details.
If funding or verification remains incomplete, the sender should resolve that with their service before your receiving bank can locate the final payment.
For a missing SWIFT wire, ask the sender’s bank to trace it and provide the payment reference or tracking information to your French bank.
If the sender says it was delivered, give your institution the amount, currency, date and reference so it can check for a held or rejected receipt.
For cash collection, verify readiness and the exact recipient name, then have the sender correct any error through the service that accepted the transfer.
If you receive less than expected
Compare the sender’s confirmation with your account entry to identify conversion, an intermediary deduction or a receiving charge before asking them to send the difference.
For future receipts, agree the expected net amount and compare euro delivery with foreign-currency receipt, particularly when the same deduction recurs every month.
Compare the sender’s cost of paying into France before agreeing where the money should arrive and who will exchange the currency.
Compare transfers to France
Enter the sender’s country and amount, then choose France as the destination to compare available transfer rates and fees.
Our methodology & why trust us
We compared receiving methods using Banque de France guidance, current account terms, service instructions and official French declaration guidance.
Our live inbound checks establish supported French payouts from selected origins, while each method’s account instructions determine how you can receive the payment.
I prioritised the information you need before sharing a RIB, including account restrictions, currency conversion and the declarations that depend on the payment’s purpose.
