How to send money from India to Canada

Pick a company

For a one-off transfer to Canada, I suggest picking the cheapest option which is Regency FX.

On a 600,000 INR transfer, Regency FX delivers the most CAD.

The best option will change depending on how much you actually send, so I suggest to get the best INR/CAD rate.

Fund your transfer

You can fund your transfer via bank transfer.

Most people pay with UPI straight from their banking app, and it reaches the money transfer company account in seconds.

For a large amount (10+ lakhs), ask for RTGS instead, it clears quicker than the everyday rails.

Verify and send

You'll need your PAN and a signed Form A2 before the money can leave the country.

Start a first transfer a few days early.

Easiest way to send INR

It works well for tuition deposits, living costs, and other ongoing payments to Canada.

Ways to fund INR and receive CAD in Canada

With Regency FX, paying by bank transfer and receiving through bank deposit is the cheapest combination. Sending ₹600,000 gives your recipient 8,736.35 CAD.

UPI can fund the INR side when the company supports it, but the outward remittance still leaves India through an RBI-authorised bank.

From India, you can fund your transfer to Canada using bank transfer.

Fund the outward remittance through your bank

Fund the transfer by bank transfer from your Indian account.

You will normally need your PAN, Form A2 and documents showing the purpose of the transfer.

In Canada, your recipient can receive CAD by bank deposit.

Consider this before sending INR to Canada

Outward transfers from India sit under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme. The purpose decides the documents and how much TCS is collected upfront.

Compare INR/CAD transfer options

For an INR 600,000 transfer to Canada, the current options are:

  1. The cheapest option is Regency FX, funded by bank transfer with bank deposit for the payout. Your recipient gets 8,736.35 CAD, which is 0.28% more than the next best option.

  2. The fastest option is Regency FX, funded by bank transfer with bank deposit in Canada. Your recipient gets 8,736.35 CAD in minutes - 24 hours.

The LRS limit covers all your outward transfers

A resident individual can remit up to USD 250,000 in one financial year under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme for permitted current and capital-account transactions.

The limit is per person and covers your combined LRS use, including gifts, maintenance, study, travel and overseas investment.

It is not a separate allowance for every bank or transfer company.

The authorised money transfer company will normally ask for your PAN, Form A2 and a purpose code.

The RBI LRS direction explains the yearly limit and permitted use.

TCS can lock up cash until your tax return

TCS is collected on qualifying LRS remittances above the annual threshold.

From April 2026, education and medical remittances are generally collected at 2% above ₹10 lakh, while many other purposes carry 20% above the threshold.

Education funded by a qualifying loan does not attract TCS.

TCS is a tax credit rather than an extra transfer fee. You can claim it against your final tax bill, but the money remains unavailable until it is adjusted or refunded.

Add up your LRS payments across banks before sending. The bank or transfer company will need your earlier use to apply the threshold correctly.

UPI only funds the rupee side

UPI can be used to deposit money to a money transfer company, but it can’t send CAD to Canada.

Instead, a money transfer company will switch to a local network of bank account or local rails to move INR to CAD.

All outward remittance still passes through an RBI-authorised dealer.
