The Best Money Transfer Service in New Zealand in 2026

Table of Contents

Wise is my top pick for an everyday overseas bank payment, with several NZD funding methods and clear costs before confirmation.

OFX is stronger for a larger bank transfer or forward contract, while Remitly is my choice when a Pacific recipient needs cash or mobile-wallet delivery.

Revolut suits an existing multi-currency user, and Western Union remains useful when an agent or cash collection is central to the transfer.

Best services for sending money abroad from New Zealand

Choose the recipient method first, because a strong bank-transfer quote is irrelevant when your recipient needs cash or a mobile wallet.

Wise

Wise offers several NZD funding methods and a clear conversion breakdown for everyday bank payments.

Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate with a separate transfer fee, which makes the currency conversion cost easier to assess.

You can pay through a New Zealand bank transfer, NZ-issued card, POLi or an existing NZD Wise balance.

The funding bank must be in New Zealand, and Wise does not accept NZD funding through an international SWIFT payment.

Bank transfers can reach NZD2.2 million, while POLi stops at NZD5,000 and card funding at NZD3,000.

Those limits make bank funding the practical choice for a larger payment, while card or POLi can reduce setup on a smaller one.

Funding can take up to two working days and conversion up to two more, before the destination-specific delivery stage.

This means the funding label alone does not tell you when the recipient will receive the money.

I would choose Wise for a supported bank recipient, then compare Remitly or WorldRemit when cash or wallet delivery is required.

Here are current fees and delivery estimates across common NZD bank-transfer destinations.

OFX

I would choose OFX for larger bank payments or help discussing the currency conversion.

NZForex Limited trades as OFX and accepts bank-funded transfers to a nominated overseas bank account.

It does not accept debit card, cash or cheque, so it cannot replace a cash-pickup or mobile-wallet service.

The minimum transfer is NZD250, and a NZD12 transfer fee applies below NZD10,000 before considering the exchange-rate margin.

The NZD12 fee alone equals 1.2% of a NZD1,000 transfer, before any cost built into the exchange rate.

That fixed fee disappears at NZD10,000, making OFX better suited to larger payments than regular small transfers.

Bank delivery is usually expected within 24 to 48 hours after initiation, with the currency and receiving bank able to extend it.

OFX also offers phone support and forward contracts, which let you agree an exchange rate for a future payment.

A forward contract commits you to its terms even if rates improve, and cancelling can create a loss.

I would choose OFX over Wise when support or a forward contract helps, then compare their recipient amounts on the same day.

The table focuses on NZD10,000 transfers where OFX no longer charges its small-transfer fee.

Revolut

Revolut makes sense for existing users who already hold currencies or use its multi-currency card.

Standard customers can add money through a New Zealand bank transfer or an NZ-issued debit or prepaid card without a Revolut funding fee.

Credit and corporate card top-ups can cost up to 1%, so bank or debit funding is usually the better starting point.

The Standard plan includes NZD2,000 of foreign exchange within each rolling month under its fair-use structure.

During market hours, there is no exchange fee within that allowance, while exchanges above it carry a 0.5% fee.

Outside market hours, the exchange fee is 1% within the allowance and 1.5% above it.

These hours follow the New York market schedule, and Revolut uses its own variable exchange rate.

International transfer fees and possible recipient-bank deductions remain separate, so an exchange without a fee can still produce a chargeable payment.

This is what you will get with Revolut Standard when sending money abroad from New Zealand:

I would use Revolut for an existing balance or smaller monthly conversion, then compare Wise once the fair-use fee applies.

OrbitRemit

OrbitRemit is a New Zealand specialist that does not require a multi-currency balance.

You can fund through bank transfer, card or POLi, with the available recipient method depending on the selected destination.

NZD funding normally reaches OrbitRemit in about four hours, although that is not the recipient delivery time.

Transfers below NZD10,000 carry a small fee, while transfers at or above NZD10,000 have no transfer fee.

This is what you will get with OrbitRemit Standard when sending money abroad:

The exchange rate still determines the delivered value, so reaching the fee threshold does not automatically make OrbitRemit cheapest.

Destination limits still apply, so check the recipient country before using OrbitRemit for a large payment.

OrbitRemit is supervised by the DIA for anti-money-laundering compliance and belongs to the independent Financial Services Complaints Limited scheme.

I would choose it when I wanted a New Zealand specialist, while using Remitly when its local payout network better suited the recipient.

Remitly

Remitly offers cash, M-PAiSA and other local delivery methods for transfers to Fiji.

You can send to Fiji through cash pickup, bank deposit or mobile-wallet delivery, including M-PAiSA.

New Zealand senders can pay using Visa or Mastercard debit and credit cards, with additional issuer charges possible on credit cards.

That payout choice is more useful than Wise or OFX when the recipient does not want a conventional bank deposit.

Fees, exchange rates and timing depend on the Fiji partner, funding method and selected recipient option.

New Zealand customers can fund with an accepted Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card, subject to the selected route.

I would compare the amount received through the exact payout method, because cash and wallet quotes can differ from a bank transfer.

I would choose Remitly for its specific Pacific delivery value, then compare Wise when the recipient only needs a bank deposit.

Here are updated quotes for NZD1,000 transfers to different destinations (including FJD and PHP), with the available payment methods shown.

Confirm the recipient method before paying, because the lowest quote may use a different payout option from the one you need.

Western Union

Western Union covers retail sending, cash funding and widespread overseas cash collection.

Online customers can pay with a New Zealand bank-issued Visa or Mastercard, or through internet banking with POLi.

Agent service adds an in-person route, which helps when cash handling or face-to-face support is more important than an app.

Recipient delivery can use a bank account, cash pickup or an eligible mobile wallet, depending on the destination.

Online profiles can send up to NZD5,000 within three days, while larger transfers require an agent.

Card issuers can treat the payment as a cash advance, adding a cost outside Western Union's displayed quote.

I would choose Western Union for cash collection or agent help, then compare Remitly and WorldRemit on the same recipient method.

WorldRemit

WorldRemit pairs several payout methods with a higher POLi funding limit.

New Zealand customers can fund by debit, credit or prepaid card, or use POLi from an eligible bank account.

Card funding is limited to NZD6,000 per transaction and within 24 hours, while POLi has NZD50,000 limits on both bases.

Destination and recipient limits can be lower, particularly for wallets or cash collection, so NZD50,000 is not a universal payout allowance.

That difference makes POLi the practical route for a larger transfer, while a card may be convenient for a smaller payment.

Recipient options can include bank deposit, cash pickup, mobile wallet or airtime, depending on the destination selected.

Fees, exchange rates and arrival estimates change with the funding and payout methods, so compare the same combination across services.

This is what you will get with WorldRemit when sending money abroad from New Zealand:

No results, please ensure you have currencies selected

I would choose WorldRemit over Western Union when its digital payout and POLi limit fit better, especially for a repeat recipient.

What to check before choosing a New Zealand transfer service

Fix the recipient method before comparing prices

Use the same bank, cash or wallet delivery method across quotes, because each route can produce a different price and estimate.

For Fiji, a cash or M-PAiSA quote answers a different need from a bank-deposit comparison.

Compare the amount received

Enter the same NZD budget, then compare the transfer fee, exchange rate, recipient amount and possible bank deductions together.

A zero transfer fee can still cost more when the exchange-rate margin produces a weaker recipient amount.

Our guide to the cheapest ways to send money abroad from New Zealand explains the cost calculation in more detail.

Treat registration as a trust check

Check the legal entity on the FSPR and its independent dispute-resolution scheme before sending a substantial payment.

FSPR registration alone does not mean government licensing or endorsement, and it does not provide a deposit guarantee.

Prepare evidence for larger transfers

Identity and source-of-funds checks can apply before a large payment, especially when the amount or purpose differs from your normal activity.

An international wire of NZD1,000 or more can trigger routine prescribed reporting by the service, rather than a form you file.

Cheapest money transfer services in New Zealand

OFX and OrbitRemit remove their transfer fees at NZD10,000, but the exchange rate can still make another service cheaper.

The comparison covers five useful destinations at NZD1,000 and NZD10,000 using current scheduled results.

Our methodology & why trust us

I selected these services around distinct New Zealand tasks, including everyday bank payments, larger transfers and Pacific cash or wallet delivery.

Our research checked NZD funding, recipient methods, customer limits, timing conditions and the relevant New Zealand entity for each service.

Comparison data updates weekly, while the final cost and delivery estimate depend on the amount, destination, funding and payout method.

We may earn commission from some companies, but commercial agreements do not influence their position or what I write about them.

Some services on the list are based on our research rather than internal testing.

You can read more about our process in our review methodology.
