The Cheapest Ways to Send Money Overseas from New Zealand in 2026

Table of Contents

Wise is my top pick for an ordinary bank payout because its fee and exchange rate appear together before payment.

OFX becomes more useful from NZ$10,000, while Revolut can cost less inside its monthly exchange allowance during market hours.

Pacific transfers need a separate payout decision because cash or wallet access can outweigh a cheaper bank-deposit quote.

The two tabs show how provider costs change between NZ$1,000 and NZ$10,000 across eight common destinations.

Keep the funding and recipient method identical when comparing results, particularly for Pacific cash or wallet delivery.

Wise

Wise shows the exchange rate and fee before you fund a bank-account payment.

New Zealand senders can pay by bank transfer, POLi, a NZ-issued card or an existing NZD Wise balance.

Bank funding can reach NZ$2.2 million, while POLi is capped at NZ$5,000 and card funding at NZ$3,000.

Those funding caps mean an NZ$10,000 card quote cannot be treated as an available alternative to a bank payment.

Funding can take up to two working days and conversion up to two more, before the destination-specific delivery stage.

The table below shows Wise quotes across all eight currencies at both example amounts.

OFX

I would choose OFX for bank-funded payments of NZ$10,000 or more.

OFX charges NZ$12 below NZ$10,000 and normally removes that transfer fee from NZ$10,000 when currency conversion is required.

The fee waiver leaves its exchange-rate margin and possible third-party bank deductions, so the recipient amount still decides the result.

OFX accepts bank funding rather than cash, cards or cheques, and its NZ$250 minimum removes very small transfers from consideration.

On a NZ$1,000 payment, that NZ$12 fee alone is 1.2% of the amount, making OFX less attractive for frequent small transfers.

At NZ$10,000, I would compare OFX with OrbitRemit on the amount received, since both remove their transfer fee at that threshold.

Revolut

Revolut can keep smaller market-hours exchanges cheap within its NZ$2,000 rolling monthly allowance.

Within that allowance, no added exchange fee applies during market hours, while exchange outside those hours costs 1%.

Once the allowance is used, exchanges cost 0.5% during market hours and 1.5% outside them, before any separate transfer charge.

This is what you get with Revolut when sending different amounts of NZD to popular destinations:

Market hours follow New York time, so early Monday in New Zealand can still fall within the more expensive period.

New Zealand bank and eligible debit or prepaid-card top-ups are free, while credit or corporate cards can cost up to 1%.

I would use Revolut when the account already serves another purpose, then check its variable rate and separate transfer fee.

OrbitRemit

OrbitRemit supports larger transfers funded by card or POLi.

It accepts bank transfer, card or POLi funding, with a calculator-displayed fee applying below NZ$10,000.

The transfer fee is waived from NZ$10,000, while the exchange-rate difference and possible destination costs remain.

That makes OrbitRemit worth comparing with OFX at the threshold and with Wise for an ordinary NZ$1,000 transfer.

Here's what you will get with OrbitRemit when sending different amounts to popular destinations:

Card funding can add issuer charges, so a transfer-fee waiver is more useful when those extra costs do not cancel the saving.

I would check the country-specific limit and recipient route before moving money solely to qualify for the waiver.

Remitly

Remitly gives Pacific recipients cash, wallet and mobile top-up options beyond bank deposits.

For Fiji, recipient options can include bank deposit, cash pickup, M-PAiSA wallet delivery and mobile top-up.

That choice can save the recipient a separate withdrawal or travel cost, even when a bank quote shows a lower transfer fee.

Remitly's fee, rate and funding choice depend on the destination, while introductory pricing should not set a repeat-cost expectation.

The NZ$1,000 examples show how Remitly pricing changes by currency, although your chosen payout method can change the final cost.

Western Union

Western Union covers agent sending and overseas cash collection when bank-only services do not work.

Online senders can use a New Zealand-issued Visa or Mastercard or POLi, while agent locations provide an in-person route.

The online profile limit is NZ$5,000 over three days, meaning a larger payment requires an agent or another service.

Card funding can create an issuer cash-advance charge that sits outside Western Union's transfer fee and exchange rate.

Compare the collected amount with Remitly or WorldRemit using the same pickup location and funding method.

I would accept a higher cash-route cost when the recipient cannot use the cheaper bank deposit in practice.

WorldRemit

WorldRemit combines POLi funding with cash and mobile-wallet delivery.

Cards are capped at NZ$6,000 per transaction and 24 hours, while POLi funding can reach NZ$50,000.

That distinction means an NZ$10,000 transfer cannot use a card but may fit POLi if the selected destination allows it.

Bank, cash, wallet and airtime options depend on the destination, so the funding cap does not prove the payout is available.

The fee, rate and delivery estimate change with the corridor and method, making the final recipient value the useful measure.

I would compare WorldRemit with Remitly or Western Union only after selecting the identical payout option.

Live comparison at the required amount

Receiving-bank and conversion costs

Compare the same payout type at the same location, since switching from cash to bank deposit changes the product being priced.

ANZ can send NZD online to the Cook Islands, so that payment needs a fee and recipient-access check rather than a currency conversion comparison.

Are New Zealand banks cheaper?

ANZ charges no transfer fee through goMoney or Internet Banking, making it a strong option when you already hold the account.

The bank still applies its quoted exchange rate, while an OUR fee or another intermediary or recipient-bank charge can remain.

ANZ covers the OUR fee for selected online routes including AUD to Australia, GBP to the UK and USD to the United States.

The same coverage applies to INR sent to India, FJD to Fiji, WST to Samoa and TOP to Tonga.

Sending by phone or branch costs NZ$15 instead, so online banking saves that charge when you can complete the transfer yourself.

If you already hold the destination currency, a bank route can avoid a new conversion and beat a transfer app on complete cost.

Compare the ANZ recipient amount with Wise or OFX rather than assuming either a bank or specialist is always more expensive.

How to save on money transfers abroad from New Zealand

Choose the recipient method

Confirm whether the recipient needs a bank deposit, wallet credit, airtime or cash collection before comparing prices.

Match the funding method

Compare bank, POLi and card-funded quotes separately because each method has its own fee and amount cap.

Check the amount threshold

Apply the OFX or OrbitRemit NZ$10,000 fee rule and Revolut allowance before judging the complete cost.

Include outside charges

Add card, intermediary, receiving-bank and recipient-access costs that sit outside the displayed transfer fee.

Check the repeat price

Separate a first-transfer promotion from normal pricing if you plan to send money regularly.

Use a current comparison for your amount and destination, then add any bank or Pacific payout quote that fits the recipient.

Our methodology & why trust us

I compare the recipient value for the same NZD amount, destination, funding method and payout route.

Our research checks transfer fees, exchange rates, plan allowances, amount thresholds and possible bank or recipient charges.

Our comparison figures update weekly, while the final quote depends on the amount, destination, funding method, payout choice and customer checks.

We may earn commission from some companies, but commercial deals do not influence their position or what I write about them.

Some services on the list are based on our research rather than internal testing.

You can read more about our process in our review methodology.
