Use these ZAR2,000 examples to check the cost of smaller payments across eight common destinations.

Compare the same funding and payout method because cash, wallet and bank delivery can produce different usable amounts.

CurrencyFair requires an international bank transfer to fund its London ZAR account, so add any sending-bank and intermediary charges excluded from its quote.

WorldRemit

WorldRemit is best for small everyday transfers abroad.

You can pay from a South African bank account or by card, with bank deposits, cash pickup and mobile money available depending on the destination.

That flexibility lets you choose how the recipient gets the money without arranging an international bank payment to fund the service.

Bank-funded transfers are capped at R4,999 per transfer and day, with a R24,999 monthly maximum.

Card payments also have a R4,999 per-transfer limit and R24,999 monthly maximum, so this is an option for smaller sends.

For South African citizens and permanent residents, permitted payments are gifts, excluding self-transfers and payments to support friends or family abroad.

Other eligible residency categories have their own requirements, while tourists, visitors and students cannot use the service.

For larger amounts or your own overseas account, I would use Currencies Direct or Shyft instead.

Use the examples below to check the current cost for your destination and preferred delivery method.

Shyft

Shyft's fixed fees work better for larger foreign-currency payments.

Eligible users fund a ZAR wallet by card or EFT, buy one of those four currencies and send an international bank payment.

Card top-ups into the ZAR wallet cost 2.5%, adding R50 to R2,000 before conversion and the foreign-currency payment fee.

EFT funding avoids that card top-up percentage, making it the better cost choice when waiting for bank funding is acceptable.

The payment fees are USD14, EUR12, GBP10 and AUD18, before the exchange-rate cost and possible SWIFT or correspondent charges.

A GBP10 fee takes a larger proportion from GBP500 than GBP10,000, making Shyft better suited to fewer substantial payments than tiny frequent ones.

Payment limits are USD75,000, EUR60,000, GBP55,000 and AUD90,000, although these limits do not replace exchange-control or customer checks.

South African citizens and permanent residents can register without Standard Bank, while foreign nationals living locally need an active Standard Bank account.

CurrencyFair

CurrencyFair can suit online exchange when savings cover international funding fees.

To exchange ZAR for GBP, EUR or another supported currency, you must send an international bank transfer to CurrencyFair’s ZAR account in London.

You cannot fund that account through a standard domestic EFT, even though you are sending South African rand.

Bank fees

Your South African bank charges an international sending fee, and intermediary banks may deduct additional charges before the money reaches CurrencyFair.

These funding costs sit alongside CurrencyFair’s exchange-rate cost and onward transfer fee, so its displayed quote may not represent your complete cost.

On a small payment, those extra bank charges can outweigh a better exchange rate, making a locally funded service more attractive.

I would compare the final recipient amount against Shyft or Currencies Direct after including every charge for getting the rand offshore.

Exchange-control allowances

South African residents aged 18 or older have a Single Discretionary Allowance of up to R2 million per calendar year, effective from 8 April 2026.

Qualifying larger investments can use the R10 million annual Foreign Capital Allowance, with SARS Approval International Transfer and bank verification of tax compliance.

That allowance requires conversion by an Authorised Dealer, so agree the permitted funding route with your bank before sending rand offshore for conversion.

Here's how much you will get with CurrencyFair when sending ZAR to popular countries (use tabs to switch amounts):

Currencies Direct

Currencies Direct adds account-manager support and an agreed rate to larger bank payments.

Most transfers have no separate transfer fee, but the company earns a variable margin within its exchange rate.

That structure can work well on a larger payment, provided its final recipient amount beats the fixed-fee and bank alternatives.

Once you accept a rate, it is fixed subject to the agreed funding deadline, which removes adverse movement but also forfeits a favourable improvement.

This is a bank-account route without cash or wallet delivery, so it does not replace Mukuru for a recipient needing local collection.

The table shows supported bank-transfer quotes at ZAR2,000 and ZAR130,000 across four common currencies.

Exchange4Free

I'd use Exchange4Free to challenge a competing quote on transfers from R100,000.

Its price-match or beat condition applies only to a qualifying competing quote at or above that amount.

The policy can strengthen your position on a substantial payment, but it does not establish a winning price for every currency or amount.

Exchange4Free agrees the exchange rate before the customer sends funds to an Authorised Dealer bank for execution.

Ask whether intermediary charges can reduce delivery, then compare the same currency, timing and fee allocation across both written quotes.

Sable International

Sable International helps with transfers involving AIT, inheritance, emigration or source-of-funds paperwork.

Its South African forex service handles discretionary payments, foreign-investment transfers and cases requiring additional exchange-control support.

A specialist fee can be worthwhile when an apparently cheaper app leaves the sender to resolve the documentation or allowance path alone.

Request the complete rate, provider fee and possible banking deductions before booking because administrative support does not reveal recipient value by itself.

Adult South African residents have a R2 million Single Discretionary Allowance per calendar year under the rules effective from 8 April 2026.

Larger investment transfers can require tax-compliance approval, so include the cost of any assistance with that process in your quote.

For a straightforward family payment, I would choose a remittance service that already supports the recipient and the required amount.

Mama Money

Mama Money combines salary, EFT or cash funding with several delivery methods.

The Bank Zero-powered account charges a 5% international fee, meaning a R2,000 transfer carries R100 before the exchange rate.

Account holders also face a R29 monthly charge, a once-off R99 card cost and a separate cash-loading charge where used.

Those charges make an already active account more attractive than opening one solely for a single transfer.

Upgraded limits reach R50,000 per order and R100,000 monthly, with identity and income requirements affecting the available tier.

If you use Mama Money without the account, check that service’s quote separately because the account tariff does not apply universally.

Mukuru

Mukuru works well for regional family payments needing cash, wallet or bank delivery.

Orders can start through WhatsApp, USSD, app, web or a physical channel, with recipient methods varying by destination.

The sender can use supplied bank details, an FNB payment path or a Mukuru card depending on the chosen flow.

A bank-only quote may look cheaper yet leave the recipient paying to withdraw funds or travelling to reach an account.

Mukuru Account customers can receive EFT, salary or cash loads and may receive lower transfer fees for supported destinations.

For regular sends, weigh those savings against any account or cash-loading charges instead of choosing solely for a discounted transfer fee.

Compare specialist prices with a bank transfer

Standard Bank charges 0.62% for a standard online or app outward telegraphic transfer, subject to a R180 minimum and R830 maximum.

It also adds a R125 communication fee, making the VAT-inclusive sending-bank charges R305 on R5,000 and R435 on R50,000 before exchange and overseas costs.

The minimum therefore weighs heavily on a small payment, while the exchange rate can become more significant as the amount increases.

With OUR you pay the bank charges, SHA divides them between sender and recipient, and BEN deducts them from the recipient’s payment.

Ask about intermediary deductions separately, particularly when the recipient needs the exact amount on an invoice.

Wise cannot fund an outgoing transfer directly from ZAR, so use a provider accepting local rand funding for this payment.

Separate migrant remittances from resident offshore payments

Mukuru and Mama Money serve recipients needing regional cash, bank or wallet access, with eligibility and limits shaped around remittance use.

WorldRemit’s permitted purpose depends on residency, with gifts allowed for citizens and permanent residents within its product limits.

Shyft, Currencies Direct, Exchange4Free and Sable suit resident bank payments, foreign-currency invoices or documented offshore transfers at larger amounts.

Choose the purpose first because the cheapest family remittance app may be unable to execute an investment or own-account transfer.

Our guide to the best money transfer services in South Africa explains the wider service choices and recipient methods.

How to save on international money transfers in South Africa

Define the payment purpose

Confirm whether the payment is a gift, family remittance, invoice, own-account transfer or investment before requesting quotes.

Match the recipient method

Compare bank, wallet or cash routes that leave the recipient with the same usable outcome.

Include every charge

Check which fees are included in the quoted debit and recipient amount, then account for any additional funding or bank charges.

Check amount thresholds

Consider fixed fees, percentage charges, quote thresholds and product caps at your exact ZAR amount.

Verify documents and pay

Prepare identity, purpose and source-of-funds evidence, then confirm beneficiary details before sending the money.

Use a current comparison for the destination, then request a specialist quote when the purpose or amount needs dealer support.

Our methodology & why trust us

I compare the complete ZAR cost and recipient amount using the same destination, purpose, funding method and payout route.

Our selections prioritise recipient value, exchange costs, access, amount limits and help with the required payment documents.

Our comparison figures update weekly, while your final quote depends on the currency, amount, purpose and customer checks.

We may earn commission from some companies, but commercial deals do not influence their position or what I write about them.

Some services on the list are based on our research rather than internal testing.
