WorldRemit lets you choose a bank deposit, cash collection or supported mobile wallet, then save the recipient for your next payment.
In my opinion, it suits small gifts or family payments abroad, especially when you want remote funding without visiting a pay-in shop.
You can pay from your own South African bank account into its Absa collection account, or use an accepted debit, credit or prepaid card.
The app stores transfer details and tracks progress, while the destination determines the available collection network or mobile wallet.
Airtime top-ups are a separate option for phone credit, rather than money the recipient can withdraw.
Transfers are limited to R4,999 each and R24,999 per month, with bank-funded orders also limited to R4,999 per 24 hours.
Your residency and payment purpose must fit the service, with citizens and permanent residents able to send gifts rather than transfer savings to themselves.
Tourists, visitors and students cannot use this South African sending service, so signup eligibility comes before choosing the payout.
The price combines its sending fee and exchange-rate margin, without a compulsory app subscription or an assumption that card funding is always cheaper.
My suggestion is to keep it for these everyday payments, then use a bank-payment app or broker for larger self-funded overseas transfers.
These WorldRemit examples use R2,000 and R4,500, showing the receiving amount and quoted cost for supported destinations below its transfer cap.

Mukuru lets you create the transfer in its app, then pay through an available EFT, instant EFT, card or participating cash partner.
I think it is worth considering when your funding starts as cash, while the recipient needs a collection point or supported wallet abroad.
The app saves recipient details, tracks orders and helps you find payment or collection partners, making repeated family payments easier to manage.
You can upload documents to increase your sending limit, rather than assume the first registration level covers every amount.
Its available funding choices include offered Ozow, bank and card options, with the order’s reference linking your payment to the transfer.
Sending fees and exchange rates depend on the destination and payout, so the recipient amount is more helpful than a single headline percentage.
You do not need the optional Mukuru Account to use ordinary money transfers, which keeps the bank-card decision separate from sending home.
That optional account costs R30 per month, with its own loading and transaction charges alongside the remittance price.
I suggest adding the account when receiving salary and managing local spending helps, rather than opening it solely because you need one overseas transfer.
Mukuru is worth it

Mama Money accepts supported South African or foreign identity documents, including asylum or refugee documents, alongside a selfie during app registration.
In my opinion, it is worth considering when you need to send home without fitting the usual South African bank-account opening process.
You add the recipient and receiving method, then fund through an offered local card, EFT or participating cash point.
The app follows the payment, with its wallet also able to retain money for a later overseas transfer.
Bank, wallet and cash delivery depend on the receiving country, while its service does not allow a transfer to yourself.
Its sending fee is quoted at 5% or less, with the exchange rate and chosen recipient amount still part of the cost.
Ordinary remittances do not require its optional card account, which charges R29 per month and R99 for the card.
That Bank Zero-powered account supports local salary and spending, rather than provide a foreign bank account for overseas income.
My suggestion is to use the standalone transfer first, then add the account when its local salary or card functions justify those extra charges.

Hello Paisa lets you enter the recipient’s nationality, choose the receiving method and select the payout partner while building the order.
My suggestion is to use that process when the recipient knows which collection service they can reach, rather than choose solely around a large advertised network.
You can fund the order through EFT or a participating retailer, then retrieve its invoice from Transactions when you need the reference again.
The app also lets you request a callback, which gives you a support route without searching for a separate contact number.
Registration accepts the required South African or foreign documents, with address verification handled through its available verification process.
The transfer fee and retail exchange rate depend on the destination, so I suggest comparing the final recipient amount for the chosen payout partner.
Its optional banking and card services have separate charges, rather than make a bank account compulsory for an ordinary remittance.
My suggestion is to choose another service when it reaches the same recipient more cheaply, while keeping Hello Paisa for the collection arrangement that fits your family.

Shyft lets you fund a rand wallet from your own South African bank account, then buy and retain dollars, pounds, euros or Australian dollars.
I’d say it suits planned overseas bank payments and foreign spending, especially when you want to keep the currency until the next bill.
If you are a South African citizen or permanent resident, you can use Shyft without an existing Standard Bank account.
Foreign nationals living in South Africa need an active Standard Bank account, while the bank operates the app and sets its exchange rates.
The app manages saved bank beneficiaries alongside foreign balances and physical or virtual forex cards, making it a locally funded multi-currency account option.
Bank EFT avoids Shyft’s card-top-up charge, while an accepted card adds 2.5% to the rand wallet funding.
International bank payments cost USD 14, GBP 10, EUR 12 or AUD 18, depending on the currency you send.
The exchange rate can include a margin, and intermediary or receiving-bank charges can reduce the amount credited abroad.
There is no compulsory monthly subscription, while a physical card costs R100 and foreign card purchases carry a separate 0.5% charge.
I suggest avoiding its fixed-fee bank transfer for a tiny family payment, where a remittance app with the required payout can cost less.
Foreign nationals can send qualifying funds earned or received locally, with their permitted funding and payment purpose checked during the transaction.

If you already bank with FNB, its app lets you create a Global Payment or select a saved overseas bank recipient.
You enter the payment details and balance-of-payments purpose, then confirm the order without opening a separate transfer account.
I suggest using it when the payment needs your bank’s documentation and purpose handling, rather than forcing a family-remittance product into a property or investment payment.
The app combines foreign payments with ordinary account activity, while account and source-of-funds checks depend on the transaction.
Its optional Global Account holds nine supported currencies and can receive eligible foreign income, giving you a balance to retain for later payments.
There is no separate monthly Global Account fee, although your underlying banking package and optional card can still cost money.
Sending costs include the bank’s transfer charge and exchange-rate spread, with the selected fee arrangement determining who pays applicable correspondent charges.
My suggestion is to compare a suitable broker quote for a large conversion, then choose FNB when its bank workflow and existing account fit the payment better.
A familiar banking app alone does not make the receiving amount better than a specialist’s quote.

CurrencyFair lets you save a bank recipient, obtain funding instructions and exchange money before arranging the onward payment through the app.
In my opinion, it suits a planned transfer when setting a rate or using its exchange order functions helps more than instant card funding.
You fund rands by instructing your South African bank to make an international bank transfer to CurrencyFair’s ZAR account in London.
A standard domestic EFT does not fund that account, so the sending bank and possible intermediary charges come before CurrencyFair’s conversion costs.
The bank also handles the payment purpose and exchange-control requirements, which remain relevant even though the wire is denominated in rands.
CurrencyFair combines an exchange-rate cost with a transfer charge usually equivalent to EUR 3, without a compulsory monthly subscription.
You can use a fixed rate for 48 hours or set a marketplace order, with the latter requiring a match rather than guaranteeing your chosen rate.
I suggest avoiding this funding route for a small family payment when the international wire charge outweighs the exchange saving.
The app’s bank-payment features also do not provide a cash-pickup network or an everyday spending card.
These CurrencyFair examples show exchange and transfer costs alongside the amount received, before your South African bank’s international funding charge.
These live examples cover seven destinations at R2,500 and R4,500, while the locally verified remittance apps remain separate options in the reviews.
The WorldRemit and CurrencyFair review tables use R2,000 and R4,500, so check the quote for your intended payment size.

Cash funding is different from cash collection
Mukuru, Mama Money and Hello Paisa can create an app order that you fund through a participating local cash point.
WorldRemit uses its supported bank or card funding, even when the recipient chooses to collect cash abroad.
My suggestion is to select the sender’s funding method and the recipient’s payout separately, rather than assume a cash network serves both ends.
For an urgent international transfer, include funding time and cash-point opening hours before relying on the recipient’s delivery estimate.
PayShap and ordinary domestic eWallet payments solve local sending needs, without replacing a supported international bank, wallet or collection route.
Choose a remittance or an overseas bank payment
WorldRemit and Mama Money restrict self-transfers, which makes them different from an app you use to move savings into your own foreign account.
For that bank-payment task, my suggestion is to consider Shyft, FNB or an appropriate broker around the permitted purpose and funding process.
Eligible adult residents have a R2 million annual single discretionary allowance, while additional qualifying foreign capital transfers use a separate tax-compliance process.
Those national allowances do not increase an app’s own sending cap, and residency category or payment purpose can change the route available to you.
For larger payments, South Africa’s international transfer limits belong beside the bank’s documentation process rather than a generic promise that every app supports the full allowance.
Local EFT, offshore funding and foreign income are separate routes
Shyft accepts local rand funding into its wallet, while CurrencyFair’s London ZAR account requires your bank’s international transfer process.
Wise handles eligible foreign balances but cannot start the outgoing transfer from local rands, even though you can sign up from South Africa.
I’d say choose the app around where the money sits today, including any bank charge needed to reach the conversion account.
Holding foreign currencies can help with a later bill, but it does not remove the original funding or exchange-control requirements.
Choose a supported family payout or bank-payment route, then confirm that the app permits your purpose and residency category.
Complete your registration
Upload the required identity and address documents, then enter the recipient’s name exactly as shown on their account or collection identification.
Review the complete price
Check the recipient amount and exchange rate beside sending fees, including any cash-loading, card-top-up or international bank-funding charge.
Fund and track the order
Use the supplied reference and current payment instructions, then follow the app’s progress or share the collection reference with your recipient.
Use the comparison form for your amount and destination, then choose the app around your funding method and recipient’s required payout.
Compare transfers from South Africa
Enter your destination and amount to compare available ZAR transfer fees, exchange rates and recipient amounts.
Our methodology & why trust us
I selected apps around local funding, family payout, foreign balances and overseas bank payments, with each service’s permitted sending use kept clear.
Our research checked regulated services, current South African app listings, local funding and live rand-origin transfer results.
I assessed registration, recipient management and tracking alongside exchange charges, optional account fees and restrictions on self-transfers.
